A few comments on my read this time around:
- Why would they pick a play over eating a Thanksgiving dinner in school!?!?! - I don't agree with Ms. Colman's teaching method of making students pick a role out of a hat. Although this is a good thing since I was beginning to think Ms. Colman was perfect. (Seriously, perfect.) It's kind of like forcing kids to read out loud who have trouble with it. It just makes things worse. Especially in Grade 2! I'm not sure every student wants to play a big role. Have students who want big roles to put their names in a hat and pick from there. - I love how 2 Thanksgivings in one day was such a big deal to Karen and her friends. Sorry but Disneyworld kind of trumps that, haha.

^Thank you for posting that, Virgo. I have some bad memories of similar situations regarding reading in school. Off the top of my head the only times I truly did not like Ms. Colman were when she did just that--KIMCC Author's Day/Ricky and an autumn book/Nancy. I still don't care for how Ms. Colman decided this special activity for her class and totally agree that she should have explained each role, given the kids time to consider who they wanted to play, and then take all the names (per role) put them in a hat and choose that way. As for Disney World (I've never been there) but am a huge Disney Land fan and would think going there at 7 as part of a long Thanksgiving weekend celebration would be most dibble for sure.
Or told them to make a short list of 3 characters they would consider playing after writing down a list on the board, collecting them, and deciding from there.
I was reading a snark on this book for a good laugh, and who else agrees that most parents would be pissed off for having to make difficult sounding costumes with instruction booklets as Lisa had to for the turkey? The 50's are over haha

First read this around 7+ years ago and Karen surely did go too far in her surprise..understood her embarrassment in the beginning, though..Pamela and her two buddies certainly didn't help matters..they were really grinding my gears. The irony of them giving her grief for being a stage hog when they're just as bad about showing off. It was funny when she got digs on Pamela and I felt for her when she got the stomachache.
