I like this book because Karen's surprise at the play is one of the few "bratty" things she does that I could totally relate to. It's exactly like something I would have done as a child. I don't think I ever did do anything quite like that, but I can easily picture my younger self doing it!

Now I feel like writing a fanfic about Karen being ADHD after this stunt and overeating to deal with stress as she did the next day at Thanksgiving dinner
I can't decide if this or pretending it was her birthday in Baby Sitters on Board/charging a manicure to her dad's name was brattier

I don't think, I read this book before. I'll trie to find it, at garage sales, thrift store, or rent it from the library.
I remember, going to both sides of my family on Thanksgiving. I think we did it once or twice. One year, we l go on my dad side, first. We'll get there mid-morning leave late afternoon. Then, go to on my mom side, in the evening. Then went home, like after 10 pm. But, I didn't stuff myself so full. That, I throw up.
Just month until Thanksgiving comes here in USA.

^ Wow, buttercup! That's surprising that you haven't read Karen's Surprise before because her experience in the book is very similar to the one you just described!

yeah cause Karen waited a good while too, just didn't have any discipline She could have avoided turkey all together at the big house, they were all whining about it not being ready on time, even Charlie, and for Karen and Andrew's sake, they should have had more than cheese and crackers at the table and been sensitive to them.

I was glad to discover "Karen's Turkey Day," was one of the LS books I got a few days ago at the one dollar bookstore. It sounded like a lot of you said that was a better Thanksgiving story than this one. I did love how Karen took charge in this story by creating more of a role for herself and the other "food' actors. I probably would not have wanted any type of speaking part that young--too shy--but I appreciated that she tried. As for the "surprise," I was surprised Karen managed to keep it a secret for so long. I know she knew Ms. Colman and the others in her class might be upset and that was why she held off, I am just saying it seemed like a long time for her not to have spilled the beans. This book read much longer to me than some other LS. Too much jammed into one story. I would have much rather read about Andrew and Karen spending Thanksgiving at the Big House and then having the surprise of their grandparents over the weekend. Food has always been an issue of some sort for me and I have never been someone who truly enjoys eating as in trying new food. I have said this before but that is a reason why I like the Pikes so much. They seem to put more of an emphasis on spending meal time together than what each person is eating, to me, that is how it should be. I won't go off on that now. The holiday arrangement, I will just say it brought back memories of being in the middle of adults who felt entitled to my time forgetting about "me" not to mention the time was mine not their own. Something I loved about Ed and Maureen was that at least at the onset of their divorce they immediately made sure Stacey knew how she chose to spend time with them both was up to her. It was also good to see some continuity. I had recently re-read either another LS or possibly I want to say a KIMCC where this book was mentioned in terms of Karen eating everything at a Christmas celebration but turkey. I'll have to try and find that book.

I also thought it was great that she was very musical and creative in this book although in the end it made her look like she had a motive all along. I was also surprised that Ms. Colman hadn't thought of the song idea first and was just going to have them standing or walking in their hard-to-make costumes Happy Thanksgiving Canadians!!! Have some Maize

^I just re-read this story and am wondering what was up with those costumes? They reminded me of the heavy-looking ham suit that Scout Finch wears in To Kill a Mockingbird. Not a very mobile choice of a costume for young kids especially to move around in. Virgo, from another page in this thread, I, also, didn't get why Ms. Colman decided to put all the kids' names in a hat for every role. But then, and maybe this is just me, it didn't quite sit right with me that when Ms. Colman makes her surprising announcement about her class doing something special for Thanksgiving, she immediately gives them the 3 choices of what that something special will be. Usually, she would at least ask the kids for some initial input. Maybe she, too, "forgot," a little that this was about the kids and not her. I completely understand needing to possibly set some limits and or in terms of time, all I'm saying is if she truly was asking her class what they wanted to do for the holiday, well she should have truly invited them to express that. I still would have much preferred reading more about Lisa and Seth's grand-parents visiting the little house on the same day. The two dinners are still awful, especially because I realized this time around that when Karen immediately is hesitant about the two dinner idea, Lisa replies that she (Lisa) doesn't think she'd like that either, and it sounded like she had some idea of why. :/ Turkey Day steals the show for me. ETA: One thing I did find interesting was to realize there aren't (I don't think) any T-Giving books between this one and Turkey Day. So "Turkey Day," really was supposed to be the "next" year--that of course was an alternate version of the same one.

I remember thinking of how awful it was that they made Karen and Andrew have two Thanksgiving dinners. It's no wonder they didn't feel good at the end of the day. This probably is one of my least favorite Little Sister books.

Well I can understand why Ms. Colman put the three ideas without talking to them. They are second graders and still do need some structure, and going back and forth to brainstorm ideas would have been very time consuming, as it was when she asked the class later in the book what the play should be about.

^I agree with that, Supprazz. To me, and maybe it was how I read it, it came across like Ms. Colman began her announcement in more of a "I think we should do something extra for the Thanksgiving holidays, don't you agree?" And then when the class, of course did agree, she jumped right in with, "Okay these are the 3 ideas you are going to choose from." I think if she had noticed the kids enjoying putting on plays earlier that year or maybe enjoying making up stories, she could have said that and then suggested about the play idea, saying that might be fun for the kids and their families. Have it be a little more open.

Also, Ms. C did give them some choice. Students enjoy getting options and having a say in things. As a teacher, I probably would have done the same thing seeing as there were probably time restraints and other factors that had to be taken into consideration. Also, if you let Grade 2s have free reign, they can probably come up with some crazy and unrealistic ideas.
