I liked how Audrey wanted to be Karen's twin. I also liked reading about Karen playing dress-up with Emily Michelle and how Karen hid Emily Michelle because she didn't want her to be taken away.

This book was always one I was interested in reading when I was young but never did, so maybe that's why reading it now I found Audrey a little creepy and not cute. I remember being that age and people wanting to copy you in everything and it was SO annoying. I enjoyed the Emily Michelle stuff though, and how Karen hid her in the attic.
Also Karen wears a shirt with a taxicab on it...that sounded really familiar and then I remembered that Stacey wears the same thing in a BSC book. Tres cool, McGill!

Karen also wears her taxicab sweater in the one where she rides the school bus. I like that Karen had a few articles of clothing that were mentioned in several different books (like her unicorn sweatshirt!). It just makes them seem a little more real.
Did Karen and Audrey ever hang out in any books after this one? I guess it makes sense to drop her back into the background since you don't want a million supporting characters for young readers to keep straight, but it would have been nice if she and Karen ever played together again.

I haven't seen Audrey in other books, scrounge -- but then again, I haven't read very many LS books (maybe 25ish so far)...
I felt bad for Audrey. I think she has a lot of deep issues. The twin thing must have been pretty stressful on Karen if she hid in the bathroom for 15 minutes to get away from Audrey. I can see a seven year old having to do that.
What was Emily doing in the attic for so long with friggen Lotto Tickets?! How is that going to occupy a toddler for that long? *Dungetit*

This was cute book. I felt sorry for Audrey. Emily Michelle is so cute in the pictures. SO funny, when Karen is looking for the red tape.
@virgo Lotto Tickets? I don't remember it saying Lotto tickets. Karen give her some toys & Saltine crackers. I'm surprise EM stayed in the attic. When, her family was looking for her. Doesn't say, how long they were looking for her. Until Elizabeth said she was going to the phone police. That's when Karen tells them, where EM is at. But, it's not realistic. If, they couldn't find her over half hour. My 3rd niece doesn't stayed in one room, that very long. Mostly she stayed in room 15-20 minutes tops or less.

I don't think I would have made that up out of thin air although I'm not 100% sure. I know there was something involved with lotto tickets.

I don't know how I feel about Audrey. I'm noticing that in other books she's kind of annoying. Like, if you notice her in other books, she's always pushing someone or teasing someone. I agree that it would have been a fun storyline for Karen to have actually cut Audrey's hair. Juicy drama! Also, does anyone else think the adoption subplot in this was a little too heavy for 3rd graders? Couldn't Ann have picked something a bit, I don't know, more fun and interesting?

Not at all. It's reality for people, readers included. I liked how she touched on different topics, but also kept it age appropriate. And Karen's fears about losing her were normal for someone her age, it's nice to be reminded that she's not a mini adult.
Imagine if Audrey found blonde hair dye put away and insisted Karen dye her hair and cut it and they fight cause Karen says no! And if this happened after Twin Day

Finally, there was a teeny bit more Emily info other than "We've adopted a 2 1/2 year old from Vietnam. She'll be here tomorrow." I loved how Karen and Andrew made Emily "The Story of Emily" book. I just wish we had gotten to read what both Andrew and Karen remembered about the day Emily came to live at the big house (that was what the book was about). Greer, thank you for saying this "I think maybe instead of ancestral trees, you should be allowed to merely emphasize the people in your life who are important to you." I wish I had had that assigment as a kid or even a little older, it might have helped me sort through some rough times. When I was younger it was harder for me to sometimes express to people in words the difference they made to me or just thank you, so this would have been an awesome way to have done that. I would have enjoyed filling tree branches with people who as Greer said, were important to and meant a lot to me.

I wonder if the assignment would be changed in today's world. As a teacher, I probably wouldn't do that assignment for the reasons you mentioned, zoar. But we know that Ann is into family trees (i.e. her new book series). It is an interesting topic for some but I think it might be a bit better suited as something you explore with your own family.
Also, what is someone is adopted? Do they put their adopted parents' history? Also, my mom was adopted and I was raised by my Nana and Popa so they weren't "biologically" my grandparents, but I put them anyway. Technically it wouldn't have been "accurate".
