5 Grandmothers huh... That'd be cool. I can't believe Nancy was scared of 'old people'. Seriously?!

I'm 25 and I'm scared of old people. Even the ones I'm related to. They freak me out, and I'm afraid of being rude when I can't understand what they say. And sometimes, they are racist. Also, you know, it brings out my fear of being old and incapable of caring for myself.

I can understand being scared of old people for various reasons, especially if you've never been around them. I'm scared of lots of young people, too, though. ;D Anyway, I really like this book and enjoy reading about the visits to Stoneybrook manor since they bring back good memories of my visits to nursing homes with my church groups. Glad Nancy and Grandma B paired up and thought the thing with Karen's grandma (was she "Big Mama" ;D ) was cute. ;D

I think this was my very first Little Sister book and I adore it! I love that Nancy pairs with Grandma B and that her family has her over for Jewish holidays! I think Karen was sweet to share her grandma (Big Mama) with Nancy too, even though she got a little jealous. I love the whole adopt-a-grandparent program, because some old people are VERY lonely and it was very sweet.
Aln, I like your new sig! You are so creative!

^ Thanks. Agree about the old people being lonely. I remember how happy most of them were to see us when we would go to visit. Even my grandpa who had his family around was really lonely and anxious for visitors when he was in the nursing home for a few weeks.

A group of us fromthe choir went to a couple of nursing homes during hte holidays to sing carols. I hate going to nursing homes...cause it's...depressing. I feel awkward around older people... but... it was nice making their days, they seemed to really enjoy us.

^ I think that nursing homes being depressing places is what kept me from being depressed as I just saw how happy we were making the people. And some of them were really funny. ;D One lady left a "puddle" on the floor that my friend was sitting with his feet in (and immediately tried to jump up once we told him what it was because another lady came in screeching what had happened "She pissed on the floor".... ;D) There was another guy who would always trap us and talk and talk and he was totally not with the program but was really nice and hilarious. Karen and Nancy got lucky with Grandma B.

I can understand Nancy's fear in this book. I also feel kind of uncomfortable around older people - they tend to say what's on their mind. I've gotten told by two or three people that I was big, which did wonders for my self-esteem as a kid, but I can forgive 'em Okay, I'm trying to remember what exactly happened in this book. Karen 'gave' one of her grandma's to Nancy, didn't she? Ahh, I sooooo need to reread my LS books.

I was scared of old people too when I was little, especially if they were particularly frail or ill.

I'm not afraid of old people, but they do make me uncomfortable. I feel like I don't know what to say to them. It's weird, I was really close to my grandfather when I was young, but in the last years of his life, I just felt really awkward around him. (He was a great guy, though, I didn't love him any less.)
I don't really do well talking to people I don't know anyway, which probably doesn't help.
I felt really bad for Nancy, though, I don't think they should have forced her to go. Yeah, I know, that would have negated one of the lessons of the book, but it just seemed mean to make a seven-year-old do something she's terrified of. I know that if someone forced me to go to a clown convention, I wouldn't just "get over it" like Nancy did - I'd still be afraid of clowns AND I'd be upset with the people who made me go!
...and now I'm going to have nightmares about being at a clown convention. ;D
