I usually read it on Valentine's Day, too, or close to. Odd combination to read that and to watch * Picnic at Hanging Rock*....

^ You watch Picnic at Hanging Rock? I read the book for Uni, freaking weird. There's alot of speculation it was based on a true story. But on topic, I might read this for VDay too

^I think I will read this book today, it always makes me smile and puts me in a good mood, and I could use a good dose of that.

I loved the movie the first time I saw it, which was several years ago in college. The German teacher there also did a few film classes and a film festival.

Ms. Colman says they're making "mailboxes" by gluing two pieces of oaktag together, and Karen is like "they did not look like mailboxes." Haha. I remember one year in elementary school we cut holes in milk jugs and decorated them with red hearts. That was cool.
Second sentence of the e-book: "Nancy is one of my beat friends." I pictured Karen and Nancy wearing berets.

^I remember in elementary school we made "mailboxes" out of kleenex boxes and stuffed our class valentines in them. I always thought that was so fun decorating it for Valentines day.

I don't think we ever made mailboxes for our valentine cards in my grade school; the teachers would just let our desks get cluttered with valentine cards and candy lol ;D. Drove me crazy as a kid because I wanted everything to look nice and organized haha. ^I think I will read this book today, it always makes me smile and puts me in a good mood, and I could use a good dose of that. Yeah I read it last night and it never fails to put me in a good mood. Always transports me back to being a kid and I love the book just as much now as I did then .

All I can remember ever using for Valentine's were paper bags that we decorated with hearts or whatever we wanted. I copied Karen's design in this book one year.

If we don't know how long the Johanssens have lived there, it's possible that they lived there from early in their marriage, or that they deliberately bought a smaller house so they'd be able to pay off medical school loans, etc. I'm thinking of a relative of my mother's who's a doctor but has always lived in a house more modest than most people would imagine. Their priorities for their money just haven't been to have a bigger, flashier house! I think it's mentioned that the Johanssens moved into their house when Charlotte was four. It might have been in #13. I think your reasoning makes sense though. And Mrs Johanssen is a GP if I remember correctly, so she probably doesn't make a massive amount of money anyway. I guess Mr Johanssen, as an engineer, probably does. I really like the part in this book where Andrew is trying to cut out a heart shape and it turns out crooked, because I could never draw even hearts either.

^Neither could I when I was younger. I tried so hard to be creative when I was younger but everything always came out crooked.

I loved the Valentine Day's little house breakfast and party and the trip to McDonald's. I loved Pamela's reaction after Bobby kissed her.

I liked how in class Pamela said, "I wish I could only have a party with my two best friends" and Karen said, "I wish you could have." That's probably the best thing Karen ever said!
