Michelle never tried to hide the phone bill to the point where their phone service was shut off though.

Auugh I immediately thought of that Full House plot too. I think Danny was way more of a pushover than Watson ever was. I thought of that plot too when I read this book (and the book is the first thing to come to mind when I see that episode). I agree about Danny being more of a pushover than Watson.

^That episode was recently on ABC Family. Michelle knew those calls cost money. Karen didn't until one of her friends told her. Karen accepted her punishment graciously while Michelle moaned and groaned about hers and I don't believe she had to pay Danny back like Karen had to repay Watson.

The first thing I thought of was that Full House episode, too. Michelle didn't get as far as hiding the phone bill, though. Danny confronted her with it. But I don't remember her getting punished beyond a short grounding. I think Karen Brewer and Michelle Tanner would have gotten along pretty well. Together those two could have cooked up some real trouble!

I started reading this last night. The jokes are lame, but the phone number made me laugh. 1-900-555-HAHA. So lame. I also laughed when Watson restricted Karen's phone calls and she replied "But I'm a very popular person."

Why would Watson not have noticed that he didn't pay the phone bill for 3 months? (It takes 3 months before they shut off service). I mean, he's the type of person who probably has a list of bills and would notice something like that.

Finished this last night. According to Nannie, the Stoneybrook phone company is very strict about non-payment of bills. Watson only missed one month's bill and their service was cut off. He did know he didn't pay the bill yet and even called the company to get a second bill sent to him because he never received the first one. (Look under your daughter's bed, Watson. I'm sure there's all sorts of stuff under there.)
Kristy really held a grudge for a long time. That phone call she missed from Stacey sure wasn't the professional way the BSC normally runs.
I admit Karen was very smart to look up the shoe store numbers and track down Watson and Elizabeth so quickly.
I liked the little bit of modern stuff (for 1997) in here. Cordless phone! E-mail! I remember when E-mail was so cool.

Didn't cell phones exist when this book was written? You'd think that both Watson and Elizabeth would have them.

You know, I graduated from high school in 1999 and I don't remember the general public having cell phones until the 2000s. One of my friend's parents had one and it was a big one that was left in the car if they took it anywhere. My good friend was sooo busy ( )with after school activities that her parents bought her a beeper to get a hold of her. Not a cell phone, a beeper. Then she'd have to run to a pay phone (which were still fairly common) and call home. They were a weird family. Anyway. Even if Watson and Elizabeth had cells, they are the type of family to still have a home phone. Watson probably had a separate line for his office too.

The "big" cell phones remind me of Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell.

I graduated in 2000 and I had a cell phone my junior year. My friends parents started getting them phones senior year. It was larger than the ones we have now, but not horrible. I also had a friend with a beeper "in case of emergencies" which we all laughed at because it was SO useless.

Another 1999 high school graduate here - cell phones didn't really catch on (in my area, anyway) until I was in college. My first cell phone looked like a remote control and my now-husband used to tease me about it because I had it for a few years before finally upgrading to a better-looking one.
When I was in high school, everyone thought beepers were cool. A bunch of people at my school had them.
I think it's pretty cool that this book mentions e-mail, though. It makes it seem less outdated.

Also remember at the end of Karen's Nanny when Seth showed Karen how to do research on the internet for her and Addie's project on Jupiter? She made such a big deal about how cool it was and it was just so true especially for that time; I was just as surprised as Karen when we first got internet and you could do that.
