While reading this book, I wished that they actually mentioned the Zodiac signs of the different characters. The one in which is says "you will be the center of attention" and Karen gets all happy because of it reminds me of an Aries.
I had this happen to me when I was a kid. Only I was calling phone sex lines and hanging up and giggling once the voice recording picked up. Little did me (and my cousin) know that we were being charged for it. I don't think we got in trouble because it was only a one-time, goofy thing, but the book reminded me of that.
I love how $40 seems like SO MUCH to a seven year old.

This sounds like a good book. I haven't read this book before. It's on my LS books, I haven't read yet or re-reading them again.

I don't know if it was because I read a Ramona Quimby book before this, and she mentions how she dislikes stories and people who are real (I don't know if I'm explaining that well enough) BUT it left me with a bitter taste in my mouth with Karen winning yet ANOTHER contest. Didn't she win one in Karen's Babysitter? The universe stacks the odds in favour of her again when Kristy has her accident -- poorly written -- and makes up with Karen indirectly as a result. Why didn't they have another normal "patching-up" conversation? Although I liked how Kristy was seriously pissed about it because I felt that was real. If she gets mad at a minute tardiness to a meeting, I'm sure a lost job would really bother her. I wish Karen would have not won the contest and had to pay the money back herself. She was doing a pretty good job, I felt. It might have taken her a few weeks longer at the rate she was going, but I don't think that's too bad. If I was her parent, I would have given her a small treat or something along the way if she was sticking to it, seeing as she's only 7.

I just read this book because of some telephone, not exactly trouble, but annoying calls later at night where no one says anything. Hope the phantom isn't on the loose again. This time around, probably because I have become much more of a Karen fan, I didn't mind as much that she won the contest. I still don't understand about Kristy's accident (how it happened) and agree with you Virgo that it was poorly written. That scene seemed to literally have been thrown in as a way to get Karen back on the phone and out of trouble. One thing I did like is it seemed Stacey and Kristy were closer friends in this story. I have said this before but earlier in BSC books, I had hoped they would have stayed better friends--books like Mystery of Stoneybrook and just a general feeling I got that Stacey did admire Kristy, made me feel that way. That said, I know Stacey trusted Karen to give the message that Kristy needed to be at the Arnolds that night at 6. I'm glad she did trust her. Trust aside, since this was a last minute switch and Stacey knew Kristy was expecting her call about this, I didn't quite buy that Stacey wouldn't have asked Karen if Kristy were in fact home and could she please go get her, just to be certain the message got through. On the other hand, Kristy must have been waiting for Stacey's call too and she should have either called her or even the Arnolds to be sure a sitter had contacted them. An extra "detail" I noticed this time around. I did love Andrew's new sneakers with green trim that lit up on the sides, too. I want those,

I finally got my hands on this book.It was all right, I suppose, but kind of felt wanting considering when I first saw the summary in the back (in 6th grade) I really wanted it. I know Karen enjoyed talking on the phone, but is it just me or does it seem like it was exaggerated for the sole purpose of this storyline? I mean in other stories she only used the phone when she wanted to invite a friend over or if she had something important to say to her friends and family. One part I enjoyed was how calm and rational was when Watson was so calm when Karen went to confess, he just let her tell her entire account without interrupting. And the illustration of them hugging is soo sweet.

I read this recently and liked the part where Pamela calls Karen, and Karen is surprised because, you know, they're "best enemies" and all. But basically everyone in Ms. Colman's class is on the phone with one another all the time in this book because of the joke-telling craze. Anyway, Karen is surprised that Pamela would call her, but they wind up having an enjoyable conversation and that just seems really sweet.

Didn't cell phones exist when this book was written? You'd think that both Watson and Elizabeth would have them. Cell phones existed way before 1997. Trust me.

The first half of this was boring because it was all Karen on the phone. Bobby’s joke was better than anything that she paid for. (What is a vampire’s favorite fruit? Neck-taries!)
This made me remember radio contests. I never called in, but things like free concert tickets were major. They always did the cheesy call number tie-in like this one with the one-one-one over and over again. I liked how Karen put the radio employee on hold and was bummed that they hung up on her.
This also made me remember how much I hated call waiting. It was the first step to the be available at all times culture that we’re in now. I was not available. I was already talking to someone! And you couldn’t really ignore it because the beeping would cut your voice out so the person on the other end couldn’t hear you. My bestie was always like “...are you going to get that?” because she could tell when a call was coming in.
I loved how hyped Hannie was for the phone bill. (“Let’s go to your room so you can open it,” said Hannie. “I cannot wait to see how much it is.” “This is like the Academy Awards. ‘The envelope, please,’” said Hannie, giggling.) Lol, no regard for Karen’s impending doom.
Kristy held a grudge for a long time for something that was partially her fault. She knew that Stacey was supposed to call. As far as she knew, Stacey hadn’t called. Yet she booked another job anyway. Not very Kristy like.
Kristy chopped her hand up and went into shock. Do 911 operators really have you decorate your mailbox? I would be too frazzled running around the house looking for something red. I liked how the whole nosy neighborhood came out to gawk at the ambulance. Mrs. Papadakis helped herself to a free ambulance ride. Karen seriously impressed me with the yellow page searches for the shoe stores and tracking Watson down! But seriously, what happened to Kristy? She got stitches but was also held overnight for observation. They acted like she needed a transfusion.
