I also collected rocks from the beach, I liked the shiny pink ones. Also I tried to collect ice cubes in kindergarten and was devastated when they "disappeared" from my box

I had so many stupid collections at Karen's age. I said I had a rock collection, so people assumed I knew the names of different kinds and liked identifying and labeling them and stuff. Uh, no. I just picked up rocks that I thought were pretty and kept them in a shoebox. Thanks for making me feel dumb, teacher. Like Becca Ramsey! Did you have Millikan's nose?

Millikan! I remembered that there was a rock shaped like the principal's nose but I couldn't remember his name.

I loved how Karen had to top Maxie's twin sisters...

This is pretty consistent with Karen's big imagination (as in her growing injury story in #2).

I agree. At their age, I wanted cool clothes just like Maxie. I did have my ears pierced, so I didn't see that as a big deal. Lol at the alligators and castle. So unrealistic!

^ I made up an outfit like maxie's school picture for my next school picture after reading that. I had on a sweater with rainbow round patterns and a headband with coloured studs. I also had big pink classes, so I probably looked like a cross between Karen and Maxie awww I was adorable though I hated on that picture when I was a teen

My class did a pen pal project when I was in about grade 3. We also sent that class a teddy bear and they sent us a toy I don't remember now, a koala or something. Every night one person would take the toy and his notebook home and write a little story about what they did with the toy, and at the end of the year we got our teddy bear and the book they'd written back. It was very cute. My penpal was nice enough, I guess, but we didn't keep in touch.
Karen's wearing her pink glasses on this cover while she's writing a letter! Big no-no xD

I liked reading about Karen and Maxie's letters and I liked the bragging they did to each other through the letters.

I love how, in the illustrations, Maxie looks totally early 1990s. I can see a girl during that time looking like her and dressing like how she did.
Brings back memories!

This was funny book. Made me laugh. I couldn't stop reading it. So funny about the castle & alligators. I knew Maxie was bragging in the beginning.
I used had Pen Pal. My older sister got me write to a girl in a different country called Philippines. We didn't stayed touch long. Cause, we moved. I miss place her address or my letter or her letter got lost in the mail.
I remember sports events in school. I wasn't good at them. I came in 4th place jump rally. (not sure the right term of it.) With my mild cerebral palsy. Some of the physical ed. It was difficult for me.

I would have loved having a pen pal as a kid. I think it is awesome that some of you on here did. Sparklymouse from years ago, that is so funny about the ads for buying a penpal. I can imagine that in the back of a Teen magazine. As for Maxie, I wasn't a fan of hers either. I would have preferred learning more about the Zuni kids than these 2nd graders in NY. I wonder if the Ghosties ever considered that or if that would have been too hard because they would have had to go back and figure out which kid at SES had already had a Zuni penpal. I really did enjoy the Zuni storyline and it would have been awesome seeeing a tie in to that here. Of course, I am always hoping for a LS/BSC tie in. PE in school, I will just quote Afton Except in my case, I highly doubt I ever got any certificate. I have shared on here before that one of the happiest school days of my life was the final day of 10th grade PE because it was not required the next two years. Back to LS, I thought Karen's Field Day was much better because it has the entertaining subplot of the family history assignment.
