I have a feeling that if I ever met President Clinton, I would do something embarrassing. I have a small crush on the guy, and I can only imagine what my reaction would be. You can come visit President Ford now, and stop by my house if you'd like. I just went to "see" him last week, actually. (actually I wanted to take pictures of the river and the Presidential Library was like two feet away and I hadn't been there since I was tiny, so I figured why not) I also would end up ranting if I met our current "president". I would probably end up in secret service custody and detained at Guantanamo bay, never to be heard from again. So let's just hope that doesn't happen.

^ ;D I have to laugh thinking about "meeting" President Ford because this reminds me of a conversation that I had a little while ago with my little cousin (the one who lives really close to GR) who was talking about how he was president "a long, long time ago" ;D This made me feel really old since he was before my time but not that far before.... ;D Anyway, about this book, is this the one were Karen has to do the three legged race with Hannie or Nancy or is that Karen's Field Day? I always get these two confused.

That's the field day book. This one was actual physical fitness stuff. Karen said she did ten push ups! I wonder if they were girly from-the-knees push ups or real ones. I'm not good at push ups either. I swear between push ups, pull ups, and trying to climb the stupid rope, my arms might as well have not been connected to my body. I have no upper body strength at all.

^ Thanks. Not sure why but I totally don't remember that part. ;D As for the upper body strength, don't feel bad because I was talking to my mom about this test yesterday (she was a phys ed teacher and said all of the kids except a few - even lots of the good athletes - hated it ;D) and she said that she almost didn't pass because of the stupid pull-ups. She couldn't do them even though she has really strong arms and in HS (when she had trouble with the pull-ups) she could even bench press more than all of the boys. ;D I could really relate to Karen with the stuff with Maxie. Maybe that's why Maxie kind of irritates me, even though they did become friends in the end.

I would have liked to have met President Ford. I have no desire to ever meet our current president, I dislike him too much and would probably end up ranting at him if I ever did meet him. I would've loved to meet any president other than the one we have now, I can't stand him . I always wanted to meet JFK. Our government class watched the big debate he had with Nixon (the first presidential debate on TV) and everyone but me was bored to pieces. My mom says I have some sort of political interest and I think she's right ;D.

Has anyone else other than Sparklymouse recently read Karen's Pen Pal and do they have any thoughts on it? ;D

It's so not, and it's important. I have also wanted to meet JFK, even though I know that it's impossible. Oh, and the interesting thing about that debate is that it is a clear example of how people's perceptions of other people are shaped. Polls after that debate showed that the majority of people who watched the telecast on television thought that JFK was the clear "Winner", while people who mearly listened to it on the radio thought that Nixon came out ahead. While part of that might be explained away by both the demographic of voters with a TV at the time, it is also important to mention that JFK took time for hair and makeup while Nixon just went on, and Nixon was getting over an illness at the time. I think it's interesting how our country looks for someone who "looks presidential" for a leader.

Has anyone else other than Sparklymouse recently read Karen's Pen Pal and do they have any thoughts on it? ;D I mentioned in another thread that I don't think there's a thread on this board that stays on topic! ;D Did anyone keep in touch with their pen pals beyond school requirements? (If that's how you got one to begin with.) I had a second grade pen pal named Katie who kinda sucked and I never heard from her again after school let out for summer vacation. My fourth grade pen pal Melanie and I wrote back and forth occasionally for maybe another year beyond what we had to, but they were still rather generic letters. I can't imagine actually meeting either one of them like Karen's class got to with theirs. I remember when teen magazines would have ads in the back to buy a pen pal. You'd send money to an address and they'd connect you with other kids. The Internet sure messed up that business.

I can't stand people who think that government and politics are boring too! It's extremely important to our country as a whole . I totally agree with you on the whole perception thing with the debate. How people picked Kennedy after seeing the debate on TV and those who listened to the radio picked Nixon. It was definitely apparent in that race that the TV watchers picked Kennedy because he looked and sounded good on TV and the radio people picked Nixon, because he sounded good and had a lot of good things to say (and he was a pretty good debater). Also agree with you on getting annoyed when people say so and so will make a good president because he looks like one. I mean, WTF? Take a look at the big picture and what he's trying to promise in his campaign, rather than how they look. While looks are important, I think the people who watched the Kennedy/Nixon debate should've picked the candidate who was the best choice because of what they promised, not because of how they looked, although Kennedy was a good leader and I'd have loved to meet him .

It's nice that you did keep up with yours, sparklymouse, even if just for a little while. I would have loved to go to MT and meet my pen pal. ;D (any excuse for a trip out there ;D) We did get to see a video, which was cool.

I remember that! Girls Life used to have an ad for it at the beginning of their magazine. I thought of this book every time I came across that ad . It is true that the internet messed that business up somewhat, but not completely. Now you can write and receive letters faster via e-mail and keep in close touch with family and friends who live far away. I still love snail mail though. I still send out postcards when I'm on a vacation somewhere, even though I can very easily just access my e-mail. It's fun .

I was fascinated with Maxine's eraser collection and Karen's shell collection and immediately started my own of each, and had categories for different types of erasers, which included food, disney characters, animals, school supplies, sports, rainbows, etc. I had a french fries eraser at one point that I found while on vacation and kept them in a huge tin box. I wonder if I still have it.

I had so many stupid collections at Karen's age. I said I had a rock collection, so people assumed I knew the names of different kinds and liked identifying and labeling them and stuff. Uh, no. I just picked up rocks that I thought were pretty and kept them in a shoebox. Thanks for making me feel dumb, teacher.
