I got this at the one dollar bookstore today and really enjoyed it. It was so sweet how all the pets in Karen's life got stockings for Christmas. Has anyone read "Bobbsey Twins in the Mystery Cave?" I don't remember it but now am interested in knowing what the great story was that both Karen and Nancy were so interested in reading. Speaking of Nancy, I thought it was awesome how both she and Karen had the idea at the same time to invite one another over for part of their holiday celebrations. I remember doing that with a non Dec holiday once as a kid. This description sounded a whole lot more fun and meaningful.

We give our pets presents at Christmas, but I like the idea of stockings for them

^I liked how each pet's name was also on the stocking just like all the others. I do remember giving Champ birthday treats and every day ones, too but don't think we ever made him an actual package of sorts like a stocking would be. I forgot to say earlier that eons ago I had asked when Emily said "Pwesents?" (It is apart of someone's signature on here or was). Emily pointed to the tree and and said "Twee and I think also Pwesents" in this one. Not sure if she ever does again, probably since she gets to relive many a holiday. Just wanted to share I had found this one place at long last.

I thought the pets reactions to the gifts were so cute awww and we gave our cat a kitty themed christmas stocking too full of cat treats and catnip
I wish we knew what presents they got in their stockings. It said they got toys, presents, candy, walnuts and a tangerine. It was nice in Karen's Reindeer when she got that little gold Reindeer and note...though Charlie totally wrote that!
Also, I agree Emily is adorable, even in Karen's Surprise during the big house dinner when she kept saying turkey and had on the cute little red dress awww

WHY is "Rock of Ages" sung in Hebrew? It's a lovely hymn- a New Testament hymn, not one Jews would have a reason to sing!

that still begs the question as to why Karen knows it!

that still begs the question as to why Karen knows it! What, you mean Karen, as a non-Jewish seven-year-old, shouldn't be able to sing in Hebrew perfectly?

I reread last night and loved it. I had looked at Ann's FB page the other day and saw she had shared that when she and her sister were little they used to write letters to Santa and their dad would send them up the chimney to the North Pole. Karen and Andrew do that in this one. I had thought Suzi did that too in Here Come The Bridesmaids but think she just had the gigundoly great idea to leave the cookie trail. I'm not a big fan of that book as a whole but loved the Suzi Christmas parts, I'll have to reread. I was so glad Nannie came home for Christmas and Karen and everyone were so thankful to see her. I still love that the pets had a stocking, too, so funny and cute. Mostly it touched me that Watson read the Christmas story from the bible on Christmas Eve, I'm going to do that myself this year and I will always love how Karen said she believes that the animals in the stable where Jesus was born also knew he was special, I agree. It did sound fun that Karen and Nancy were able to share their December holidays and that included religious connections and Santa/dreidel game aspects, too. I would have loved this book to have been longer and returned to the Big House for even a day, be sure Nannie was okay and hear about Big House Christmas Day celebration more. I am enjoying reading the BSC Christmas books.

^i have read that burning the letters is a British tradition. I also remember them doing that in the Moffatts books by Eleanor Estes. Not sure if any of you have read those, though. They were mentioned in BSC, though!

This is probably one of my favorite Super Specials..felt so bad for Karen being worried about Nannie and all. I love how she and Nancy celebrated each other's holiday..also this was one of the books where Karen looked pretty on the front cover. ^^

One illustration of her in this book looks scary.

I remembered so little about this book. One of the most interesting things to me was that Karen and Nancy had just become friends that year. Karen said they hadn't known each other very well before then because she had started out in kindergarten and then skipped into a different first grade class than Nancy. I always assumed that they were best friends because they were neighbors. I liked them watching toy commercials and wanting everything. It made me think about how long it has been since I've seen a toy commercial played on TV. Their lists (and Hannie and Nancy's) were so pure and innocent. Except for Nancy wanting Nintendo games, nobody wanted electronic devices. Ah, the good old days. I've always wondered why that specific Bobbsey Twins book was singled out like that. Karen's great book search was one of the most relatable things to me in the entire series. That made me realize how few book stores exist anymore. She went to five different ones. Andrew was usually the quiet, well behaved one, but he was PUMPED UP for Christmas this entire book. He even shouted "I love you, Christmas!" at one point. If you want to have nightmares tonight take a looksie at this:

I want to know if that bobbsey twins book was really rare or if it was just a gimmick for the plot line Answering my own question here but I don't think this book specifically is hard to find or rare as there are plenty of vintage copies available for 4-5 USD online. Of course in the pre internet days it was harder to find old books as you'd have to go to multiple stores like Karen did. It probably seemed a lot harder for a kid to find it.
