Seems like the drink is glaringly obvious!

I never read this book, so I figured Karen NAMED her fish after the drink, a la Ramona Quimby and her doll Chevrolet. Blowing my mind!

Haha, I loved the idea of naming a doll Chevrolet!

Yes, that's why I said I loved the idea.

I felt bad for Karen when Crystal Light died. I wasn't surprised when Karen still thought of Mrs. Porter as a witch. I think that Karen would continue thinking that Mrs. Porter's a witch no matter what she did for a few more years. I thought it was nice of Mrs. Porter to give Karen one of her goldfish.

What happened to Mrs. Porter's fish pond in the winter? I've read that koi can stay in a pond over winter, but what about goldfish? Maybe she had a fancy heated setup.

I, too, thought of the drink Crystal Light when I read this. In fact, I remember thinking this when the fish was mentioned in the regular BSC series.
I always thought this was a "clever" book on Ann's part because it teaches kids about the death of their pets -- especially fish, who seem to die rather quickly sometimes.

I think, I re read this like 40 or so times. I love the black veil hat on Karen.
My older sister, when she was younger. I think, she was like 5 or 6 at the time. We got goldfish for a pet. (for the family.) My sister, thought she could help our mom, to clean the fish. So, what shes does? Dumps fish in the bathtub, add bubbles in the tub. The fish died that day or the next day.
Any fish died in our house. We just flush them down the toilet.

Fish are especially interesting because you don't know how old they are when you get them. Since they have such a short life-span, it's almost like playing roulette (picking out a fish).

^I had one goldfish who lived (I think) to be a good 5 years old. Even though I was much older than Karen at the time, I was crushed probably because "Starky" had been in my life for so long.
