In my second grade she may have gotten her name on the chalkboard as punishment, which she probably would have thought was cool.

Haha @ Hatey Hoffman. I like Karen but is it mean that I think it was slightly funny that she had to stand in the corner? Also, Pamela must be a horrible speller if she only got 40% on the spelling quiz. Hatey's okay in my books. She's a guitar strummin', backwards-clothes wearin' old lady!

^ I never thought of that before. She could have been, especially when she was younger. It gives me a whole new perspective on Hatey Hoffman!

If it's mean, I'll sit on the mean couch with you, because I thought it was funny. Perfect golden child Karen, finally runs into an adult who doesn't think everything she does is sunshine and rainbows. I still don't understand why Mrs. Hoffman turned into a nice teacher just because the kids wore their clothes backwards. It makes no sense.

That song predates the hippie era. It was a hobo song from the depression. If Mrs. Hoffman taught it to them there were probably changed words, because the original talks about riding boxcars, cigarettes growing on trees, and such like.

Revisiting my own comments, there was a real upsurge of "folk" music in the period from the late fifties to the early seventies. If Mrs. Hoffman was on the older end of that generation (and/or went grey young....) she may ahave picked up on it.

I'm rereading this again. I decide to reread some of Karen's books. Since, they're don't take long to read them.
Miss Pettig, treat the second grade students, like they were in preschool. Such funny scene.

I liked the pizza math lesson, thanks to Ms. Colman for giving me some inspiration. I assume that the school has ovens for them to bake the pizzas in and that someone will be available to supervise.

I liked this book, though I wouldn't put it at the top of my favorites..felt for Karen being sad that Ms. Colman had to miss school....Mrs. Hoffman, I could see why most students hated her..I could see her saying no talking excessively in class or no talking when you have work to do, but no talking before the bell rang? Really? I LOLed at Mrs. Hoffburger..well seeing as she DID give the students permission to write what they wanted to, Karen can't really be faulted for taking advantage of it..I also thought it was funny how Karen thought it was good when Mrs. Hoffman did not say "Boys and girls, we have a new rule: No workbooks"..also the drawing in book part..that was pretty realistic as most students would end up having to do that to make themselves stay awake in a boring class..though it was unfair that Leslie didn't get in trouble for doing it..and the "no jeans and no pants for girls rule was stupid"..it was funny when Pamela dressed as a bride. And her getting a 40% on the test, although she was shown to be a terrible speller, it was mentioned she studied so maybe Ms. Hoffman gave her that grade just to be mean.

This book was dedicated "for all those who have learned to cope without." That's deep, Ann. I love Karen's posture and expression on the cover. There are inconsistencies with some illustrations. The cover is with Hatey. Then there's a picture of Miss Pettig putting nametags on Karen and Nancy, but the girls are wearing the same clothes as on the cover. Then later there's a picture of Hatey walking the kids down the hallway. They are all wearing Miss Pettig's nametags, and Karen and Nancy have the same clothes on again. What kind of surgery do you think Ms. Colman had? She had to stay in the hospital for a week and then stay home for another 3 week. A lot of people mentioned that the kids should have told their parents, but Karen did at the beginning. The Big House kind of disregarded her. Except for SAM who never missed an opportunity to be a shitstirrer. I love how he was always such a bad influence. There was another Little Sister book that mentioned that Big Rock Candy Mountain song. I think someone wanted to sing it for one of their class projects. It would have been funny if it just kept popping up in the series like Jacob Two-Two. I hated Hatey, too. I don't like change unless it is my choice. Alphabetical seating charts are just lazy, and she probably did it so that she could take attendance quicker without having to learn their names. I don't tolerate anyone who says that girls can't wear pants. What was up Pamela's butt that she was such a suck up? Lol at that 40% spelling test. Karen explained to Lisa and Seth why she was so upset about Ms. Colman being gone. She had a lot of people/pets disappear recently. Her parents divorced, Amanda Delaney moved away, Nannie had been in the hospital, and Louie and Crystal Light the First had died. She was an emotionally drained little girl.
