RE the Taylors' lobster costumes...it's Connecticut, after all. There could be some silly tradition or a college-related thing that was behind the lobsters. I'm picturing an annual party of some kind where lobster is the main attraction. Maybe I'm just thinking of the Corn Roast my folks go to...there are Corn Roast King & Queen hats for the host and hostess.

Anyone can grow herbs in their garden, but the fact Morbidda grew them gave Karen more of a reason to believe she is a witch, cause her "normal" daddy grew a vegetable garden which included pumpkins. I think herbs sound good though, and I like the fact Druscilla played along and made up all those names to creep Karen out...maybe she should have pulled a Dawn and left things on her doorstep or something

I had quite the eraser collection as a kid, some pencils, too. ITA that Dru came across as rather odd, particular in dress. I also thought it strange we never did meet her parents. Do we ever, btw? Or is all we hear about is the divorce and later how her mom chooses to move from Stoneybrook and the bad memories? I much preferred the KIMCC "Halloween Parade" to this and always "MA's Bad Luck Mystery," for how funny it is and of course, Jamie and Georgie the ghost!

Me too, it was inspired by Maxine. I had different categories for them too and would sort them. Food, sports, school supplies, animals, disney, rainbows....

I also really liked the random chapter where Seth helped Karen and Andrew make a bunch of Halloween decorations for the little house. My favorite part! Decorating for Halloween was always sooo much fun as a little kid.

I remember bits and pieces of the book where Karen first hears about Dru, about the way she dresses and how she ate a mushroom sandwich (something I'd eat..with vegan ingredients of course)..as well as Karen's reluctance to go to the party..along with how she warms up to Dru enough to invite her over. It was mentioned in KGI that the older children told Karen Ms. Porter is a witch..when she was around 5 which is an age she'd believe anything..plus, Mary Anne also believed Karen was convinced because of the appearance..the wart..not to mention how she cackles..etc.

This started so randomly with Karen saying that Ms. Colman had two different sized ear lobes, haha.
Each class had a different costume theme. Karen’s class was literary characters. Nancy was Charlotte the spider, Hannie was the Cat in the Hat, and Ms. Colman was Mother Goose. Karen chose to be Pippi Longstocking over Paddington, Peter Rabbit, and Winnie the Pooh because “fur was too hot.” Where I live you can often need a fur coat and a sleeping bag wrapped around you just to make it outside on Halloween night. Other class themes included animals, cartoon characters (Karen like this one), and food. I would be so peeved if I got the food class. Ricky could have been his gumball and the rest could have recycled their Thanksgiving play costumes.
Ms. Colman asked the kids to collect money for the hospital while going Trick-or-Treating. Hank whined “what about the candy?” I am Hank. I’ve never collected for UNICEF or anything, but I would hate it so much both as a kid and adult. It’s so awkward asking for money, and I’m not shelling out for candy plus just handing out cash that I have no idea is going anywhere but the kids’ piggy banks. Karen asked for a donation at one house. The guy said she was the 4th person to ask and then closed the door in her face!
I didn’t peg Seth as one of those super Halloween-y people. I liked that they mentioned roasting the pumpkin seeds. That is an underrated part of pumpkin carving. I wonder if he was Mr. Pumpkin Spice or if it was limited to decorating.
It was funny that Andrew showed up to Karen’s class party dressed like a Christmas elf and that Karen was humiliated by it. Ricky was all “yo, isn’t that your brother?!”

Pictures like that are why cats freak me out. They just have so many ways to hurt you, and they're always mad.
