I finally got around to trying the CA Diaries again (though I do kind of remember trying Maggie and Ducky and not liking those, either) and read half of Dawn 1 last night before I had to put it down. I usually don’t like to say too much negative about a book but I really, really don’t like this one so far. I actually don’t like the whole diary format. The handwriting isn’t terribly hard to read but I prefer print, I miss the page numbers, and feel very uncomfortable reading someone’s private thoughts. I don’t know, the whole book just makes me feel really uncomfortable and seems really dark and depressing. I can’t relate at all to any of the characters, either. Not that I wasn’t faced with these issues. I was but chose for my life to resemble that of BSC much more. Those are the books I can relate to, I suppose. So far, I don’t like any of the characters, either, except Carol and Mrs. Winslow (who really hasn’t been in it so far ;D) Dawn is totally different from the Dawn that I liked as a kid and I hope this book doesn’t ruin my opinion of her. I will try to finish the rest of this one and see if I like it any better but so far, it’s not looking hopeful. I know I’m pretty much alone (after reading this thread ;D) on really disliking the CA Diaries but wondered if anyone else does.

I didn't like them at first, and put down the first one after a while. But I eventually picked up Sunny's 3rd diary, and I thought it was really good. Then I read more of them, and I actually "get" Maggie best.

I didn't like the "new" Dawn the first time I read it and missed old BSC Dawn, but I really liked the feel of the series because they seemed "older" and came out when I felt I was sort of too old for the BSC series. (Which wasn't even true, I'm never too old to read BSC, it seems ) I love the series but can see why you might not, aln. I have to say I haven't read Ducky's books in a long time because of his handwriting.

Glad for the other perspectives. ;D I remember Ducky's handwriting being awful, too, and also remember being able to relate the most (and that's still not saying much ;D) to Maggie. I finished Dawn 1 last night and it didn't appeal to me any more at the end - actually less. (Other than the fact that she was being very strange ;D) I actually sided with Jill and could relate to her feelings. I think I prefer books, too, where the kids are innocent and good like the BSC because it gives me a positive, hopeful feeling instead of reminding me of reality. ;D I'm not sure I will read any more CA Diaries but I might try a little of Sunny's just so I can give it a fair shot before I say I really don't like the whole series. ;D

I really like California Diaries too (the ones that I read) now. At first I didn't, but a lot has to do with mood and interest. Now that I've read most of them, I really like them. They are very different from the BSC, though, so I can see why you might not like them.

^ And I can see how you both would definitely like them. ;D We seem to have pretty different taste in books so it's a good thing there is a variety out there. ;D
