I am starting to like the California Diaries. I have two of Maggie's, one of Ducky's, and one of Amalia's. They are interesting and I like the characters. I haven't read any of Dawn's...so I am not sure if I will like the change in her and I have not read any of Sunny's. Hopefully, I can find more.

I've only read three of these books - the first one of Dawn's, Ducky's, and Amalia's. I really liked them all, and would love to find some more. I'm a wee bit slow - I saw that the books were by Ann M Martin so I grabbed them at some yard sale or something. I was reading Dawn's book and la la la, never put two and two together until she said her full name and started talking about Mary Anne and stuff - I was like WHAT?! OMG IT'S DAWN! haha. And freaked out. Dumb, yes but anyway, I was shocked with the getting drunk and probably her saying hell too, if it was in this book, but I can't remember that. But I was like .. drinking .. member of BSC... Didn't know they even knew alcohol existed ('cept for Mal, of course, when she turned down her beer from Aunt Bud - bahaha, never gets old! ;D)

Any mention of Mal and Aunt Bud's beer and I just start cracking up ;D It definitely never gets old.
There are mentions of wine and champagne in the BSC books, but yeah, I remember being shocked the first time I read Dawn's first diary and discovered that Sunny gets drunk.

I love the California Diaries as a whole. There are definitely books in it I prefer over others. I adore Ducky, but I hate Ducky Diary 2. The entire Alex storyline is SO depressing I can barely stand it. But I love the entire Dawn-and-Sunny fight arc that happens. I think that you could see it coming from the first book (that's another thing I love, how all the books tie into each other), just Dawn's disapproval, and Sunny's wild streak. And you can really see both sides of it, though, being pretty conservative, I definitely see it from Dawn's angle a lot more. I remember getting the first two from the library right when they came out, and I was their market. Still liked the BSC, but getting a little old for it, and I just fell in love with those two books. I think they got in Amalia diary 1, and Dawn diary 2, so of course they were out of order, but I really enjoyed them. I don't remember how I got back into them, but I do remember spending a lot of money on that amazon standard shipping for used books to complete my collection.

I agree about them all being tied in together, I think that's why I like them so much. After I read one, I really want to read another right after.

I just read the first few pages of Dawn II (thank goodness for ebook version ;D) and really am not liking this one either. I'm not sure what it is about the CA Diaries that really bothers me - maybe the whole journal thing of reading someone's really personal thoughts. They just make me feel very uncomfortable and bad - can't really describe it. I might try to read a bit more of this one, though, and see what I think. At least the ebook version gets around the handwriting. ;D

My mother found the first 8 of these for $1 each (find of the year!) and I'm converted. I love them, although they're kind of depressing and can be a little hard to read because of that.

I haven't read many of the CD books. I only own one of them, the one about Maggie and the band Vanish. I liked it, though. I might check out some of the rest of them.

I only own Dawn's first book, but I think I've read everybody's first and second books when they first came out (about 10 years ago). My grade six teacher would buy them for the classroom and a lot of the girls would read them (I don't think any of them was as BSC-crazy as I was). She was my favourite teacher because of that (and also because I was always writing stories in her class)

I really want Maggie Two and Three. She's my favorite and I can't find them! I love buying from the library or goodwill, and i've found almost every other CD except for hers and the last one. I even have multiple copies of several, in very new conditions.. It's very frustrating.

Maggie's diaries are my favorite. In either two or three (I think it was two), she said her favorite part of a movie was th credits because she would look for familiar names -I thought that was neat.
Penny Lane: try amazon or ebay. That's where I have to get most of my books.

I've only just started reading these books (I'm gonna do it in order) but honestly, I'm loving them! I'm assuming Ann wrote them herself? There's such a big difference in the quality of the writing between these and the BSC books. It really makes them awesome to read. Also totally love Sunny as a character- so much depth to her I think. I've been reading so much BSC lately and you just don't seem to have those character layers in them like in CD. Anyway, just happy that I took advice from these boards and started to read them.

Peter Lerangis wrote most of them, I think, except for Sunny's third diary.

Ann actually wrote a few. She wrote Dawn and Sunny's third diaries, and I think she wrote Dawn's first diary. All of mine are currently under a pile of other books, I can't see this for certain. But, I think, as for ghostwriters, there were a couple. I think Nola Thacker wrote one or two? I need to dig them up, lol.
