Yeah, so, it's been months, but I'm hoping to get discussion going back here because I love CA Diaries.
I totally think Ducky is gay. I've never been one in the fandom to see characters like Logan or Byron to be gay. Ducky's the top one for me in the series, followed by Josh Rocker (they're dating in the rpg I'm in).
I'm rereading the series right now and even in books that aren't his, it's made rather obvious. I just finished with Amalia #1 and her jerk boyfriend James makes a couple of comments. He sees Ducky and Sunny together and asks if they're going out and when he's told no, he goes "Yeah, she doesn't seem like his type". Then later, when Ducky's getting mad at him, he goes "Who are you to give me advice on girls?"
Sunny's diaries are full of stuff about him, like how he's the best gossip, has great fashion sense, and just isn't like other guys at all.

I know! The stuff they worked into the books stood out to me too. Especially that comment from James about Ducky's type. Ducky's diaries were so chaotic to me when I first read them. I could barely read his handwriting, he wrote "you" instead of "I" when talking about himself, that sort of thing. I liked him a lot in Dawn, Diary Three. He was such a peacemaker despite Dawn bugging him way too much in that book.

I always liked Ducky's diaries. He seemed like such a good friend to all of the girls. I never really thought about him being gay but now thinking about it, their could have been subtle signs.

Even when I was in middle school and reading the ca diaries for the first time I immediately understood ducky was intended to be gay. I mean, it's never implicitly stated, but try to come up with an example to the contrary: it's impossible. Remember that scene where the dude who is all in sports clothes gets all those poetry books from sunny's dad's store? Someone--i think on the bsc lj--pointed out that they were all gay poets.

I watched Pretty in Pink recently on the TV, the guy in that was called Ducky and I thought, wow that guy acts and dresses the way Ducky would... then I remembered that this character in Pretty in Pink was where Ducky got his nickname from in the first place because he looked and acted like a "young Ducky" when he was a kid.

Ducky is okay but he just seems so incredibly whiney and needy. And seriously a high school junior hanging out with a bunch of 8th grade girls all the time? Freaking weird.

I like him better in the other girls books, too. In his own he is just such a freaking cry baby. It's annoying. I mean calm down dude, some of your friends (Sunny!) actually have major problems. You don't.

I didn't like Ducky's books as much as the others. I thought they were waaaay too depressing, dealing with all the Alex stuff. (At least, I thought so when I originally read them, maybe I'd feel different re-reading them now.) I didn't mind the "You" stuff, although it took some getting used to. And I have to admit, I tried doing that in my own diary, but I lasted about a page and couldn't stand it.
As for the Is Ducky Gay? debate, I'd have to say probably yes. For me personally, it wasn't all that apparent until the last book, when he totally obsesses about the kiss with Sunny. It would've been cool to see a book with him coming to the realization he's gay, especially since Ann herself is a lesbian. (At least, I think she is, isn't she? That's what I've heard.) It would've been nice seeing her break away from the norm and do something somewhat controversial.

^yeah, she is. I think she really wanted to in cd and made it pretty obvious and has put out characters in some of her non-series books. I think in one of them there is a gay couple who live together. i've never read her non-series books so i don't know for sure.

Hello! This is my first time posting on this board. Anyway, to the poster above, I did a book report two years ago on the book that I think you're talking about. It's called "Here Today". The lesbian couple you're referring to would be Miss Nelson and Miss Woods, two elderly women who lived together for years and were *gasp* not related. (Yes, AMM italicized this.) I think at one point someone writes the word 'queer' on their driveway or something like that (though I may be getting mixed up with another book). Random Shy Girl

Thanks for the welcome. Anyway, the book is okay. Some parts of it are pretty interesting, actually. Ellie, the main character, has to deal with her mother, Doris Day Dingman, a woman who desperately wants to be a star. It isn't an amazing book or anything, but it's not bad. Random Shy Girl

I am going to have to go back and re read the CA diaries soon. I never picked up on the Ducky/gay thing maybe now that I am older I would though.

I never read CA diaries when they first came out (I only found out about them through the LJ comm) so I had already heard theories of Ducky being gay before I read any of his diaries, not sure if that swayed my opinion or not but it does seem pretty glaring at times that they were portraying him that way.
