It is just me, or does anyone else think that everyone totally overreacted when Sunny forgot about the stew on the stove while she was flirting with Bo in the driveway?
Yes- it was very irresponsible. But for f*ck's sake, she is 13, and honestly, hasn't anyone else forgotten about something in the oven and/or stove while talking on the phone, playing on the computer, etc? It's not like she poked Carol with a cattle prod to force her out of bed- and she was only in front of the house, she didn't leave the property.
And seriously- Carol getting out of bed for a nanosecond wouldn't have caused a miscarriage. Even pregnant women on bed rest are allowed to be out of bed for a certain amount of time each day- what, are they supposed to levitate to the bathroom?
Yes, if I were Dawn's dad or Mrs. Bruen I would have been pissed- but to me, their reaction was just too much.
....and man, Dawn is totally adopting some of MA's passive-aggressiveness.

I thought they overreacted a bit, but I didn't mind, mainly because I didn't really like Sunny in this book. I didn't like her much in any of the books pre-Sunny Diary 3, actually. I know, she's justifief in acting the way she does, but I think she treats Ducky awfully. So I'm not a big Sunny fan, and was secretly cheering a little bit on the inside when everyone was yelling at her.

ITA that they overreacted. Utterly ridiculous. If the baby's life would truly be at risk if Carol was out of bed for one second, if a burning pot of stew is really likely to burn the house down and kill all the inhabitants, then it's way too much responsibility for a 13 yr old anyway!

I never really thought about it that much, but now that I think back to it, I do think they overreacted. If it was that important that Carol couldn't leave the bed, they should have left somebody besides a 13 year old in charge.

^ Yeah, and I have no idea why. Unless it's the combination of the words "stove," "bathroom," and "13 year old."

I just read this one again yesterday. I did think they over-reacted to the burning stew incident. If it was truly the life-or-death matter they made it out to be, then it was Mrs. Bruen's fault more than anyone's for leaving Sunny in charge. But really, Carol just got out of bed and like, stood in the doorway. I don't think her life or the baby's life were in danger. If Sunny had LEFT with that Bo guy, that would obviously be a different story, but as it was written, I think they over-reacted.
That said, I did find Sunny and Dawn annoying in this book but I still like to read about all their drama. ;D I just really wish they could have made them a couple years older...

Which book did Sunny's mom die in? Was it this one?

I felt bad for Sunny when everyone ganged up on her and I think they overreacted. If the stew couldn't have been left alone, then Mrs. Bruen should have turned it off when she left and then turned it back on when she returned.

I feel like they overreacted in part out of guilt - Jack went to the office, then called out his housekeeper away from his very pregnant to deliver him something, Mrs Bruen left a 13 year old in charge of her work, and Dawn was already ticked that Sunny was the one with Carol when she fainted in the mall. Carol was the kindest about it, I think, because she had the least culpability. But I did think they came off as jerky, I'd have had a hard time holding something like that against a tween in the first place, but when they're also dealing with their mother's terminal illness AND they're already running around massaging your stepmom/wifes feet, getting her library books/bringing her workout tapes etc...

This! While I was re-reading it, it wasn't quite as bad as I remember, but still. I think Sunny's diaries might be the best. It's really interesting to get into the mind of someone who is truly messing up and pushing others away while dealing with something awful. Dawn is pretty awful to her at times as well and it's hard to like her. I really like Carol in this book aside from her overreacting at the stew thing. I know it's not realistic for a 13 year old to have this many boyfriends, but is it realistic for even a high school girl to do so? I did have one friend who seemed to always have a boyfriend, but she would stay with him for years at a time. Not bounce from guy to guy.
