i read it today and it is hilarious. i have already blogged about it, although i did not do as a good or thorough job as alula.
i would, however, like to share my favorite quote. it is from paula danziger:
[Ann] has a real heart for things. She cares. She’s a good friend to call when I’m having problems with dating, hair, clothing choices, and other world-shattering issues, like dust in my contact lenses. I can also count on her to call me when she’s terrified of a spider she’s found in her house, when her cats do something she thinks is funny, and when she wants to tell me about an I Love Lucy episode she’s seen for the eightieth time.
this is exactly how i imagine being friends with ann would be like.

Can you imagine calling Ann when you're having problems with clothing choices? "You should definitely wear a tie-dyed dress over purple jeans and green ankle boots...What do you mean, you don't have a pair of earrings consisting of a shoe and a sock?"
I floved Paula. She died the summer after I graduated high school, during my senior trip. My friends and I were totally depressed when we read about it in a London newspaper.

I was just skimming the chapter that mentions Paula, and forgot about the part that talks about how they bought a bank shaped like a head, named him Bob, and Ann put makeup on him. Oh, those crazy kids.

^And then she 'kidnapped' him and sent ransom notes! Like the bagful of pennies that said "Bob threw up!"
Also, that chapter features this quote which I find sort of mystifying:
Ann isn't the kind of person who's interested in buying lots of expensive things. She doesn't get excited about boats and planes.
What does that even mean? Boats and planes? She doesn't want a yacht? She doesn't like travel? I just find those to be real odd symbols of what rich people buy. Seriously, that Margot Becker R. lady is just weird.
i guess it meant that ann wasn't into the trappings of the super-rich lifestyle. haha margot becker r was sucking up so hard. like when she said that the thing that excited ann the most about getting rich was giving it away. which is a nice thought and all, but... not quite so believeable. ann must have liked her nice big new york country house.

Okay i'm reviving this thread. I haven't read this book in years... i'm two paragraphs in and came across this gem...
Mr. and Mrs. Martin chose the name Ann instead. They wanted to call their child something simple, so other kids couldn’t tease her about her name when she got older. Her middle name, Matthews, is her mother’s maiden name (her mother’s last name before she married Ann’s father — in those days, all women took their husbands’ last names).
Um... I'm sure that even today, Usually (most cases, not all) wives still take their husband's last name...and when was this written? geez. *headdesk*
