Why was Kristy's t-shirt/jeans/tennis shoes combo considered so immature and unstylish? I swear 90% of the girls at my high school looked like that every day. Nobody dressed up unless they were on a sports team and it was game day. Unless she was wearing unflattering "mom" jeans or some pit-stained shirt I really don't see what the big deal was.

Me neither. It sounds like what I wear on a regular day - about 96 procent of all people I know where jeans all the time, with a t-shirt. This can still look really nice... nicer than some of the things Claud/Stacey wore.

I guess Stoneybrook has higher standards than the real world

It always annoyed me that Claudia and Stacey's chapter 2s described Kristy's outfits as immature and almost made fun of them but I don't remember any of Kristy's chapter 2s calling Claudia's "creative" outfits absolutely hideous. I thought she was always polite and praised Claudia's sense of style. I think thier clothes kind of reflected their characters - Kristy didn't care what others thought of her but Claudia always seemed very concerned with trying to be popular.

^That's a really good point! Unless Claudia really DID work the outfits we're to believe no one else could!

In the books, it seems like most girls at SMS wear skirts or leggings. Especially leggings.
Excellent point.

I don't know if the "problem" with Kristy's outfits were that they were jeans and tshirts/sweaters/sweatshirts. I think it was that a)she never wore anything else. You had to practically threaten her to get her into corduroys or something. b)She didn't put any thought into the jeans and tshirts she wore. She wore Charlie and Sam's old shirts and things like that. No Guess jeans or anything else cool and 80s.

That's not really immature, though. I guess in a fashion sense it's, er, underdeveloped, but not really immature. Just practical.

It's also something else about the books that got completely out of hand. In the beginning of the series Kristy wore skirts sometimes and was excited at the thought of wearing a pretty dress. Later on, the number of dresses/skirts she has in her closets get less and less, she hates to go shopping for clothes and wears more and more of the same.

Oh, yeah, I remember that. At the very start of the series, didn't her and Mary Anne sometimes where similar clothes? And she was excited about her bridesmaid dress in "Kristy's Big Day"!

I think the characters were much more realistic and well-rounded/well-developed at the beginning of the series. By the end, they almost seemed like rigid stereotypes - Dawn the crusading fanatic, Jessi the "everyone is a racist," Claudia the unintellectual (can't think of a more polite way to put it

I need to talk about Claudia's clothes because they frustrate me so much. I just need to know in what universe ANY of her outfits would have been considered "cool" and "sophisticated." I mean, it would make sense if we made fun of her clothes because they were just totally 80s and outdated, but even in the 80s, most of us wouldn't be caught dead in the combinations she came up with. So what was Ann thinking when she came up with the crap Claudia wore?

Ann doesn't seem like the most fashionable person herself.

The thing about Claudia's clothes, though, is that even though we all say we'd never wear such things, back then I know we all (or most of us) thought her outfits were super cool. Even if they didn't make sense, they just seemed cool. I'm just saying, Ann did her job at convincing me Claudia was super cool when I was a kid Now, though... yikes. But yeah, I agree that it's not even that her clothes are 80s... I mean some bits are (stretch pants and the like) but most of them are just WEIRD.
