a.k.a. the one where claudia didnt cheat. i used to love this book. it was one of the more interesting of the series and claudia was my favourite bsc er. i felt so sorry for claudia when her parents thought that she cheated off shawna. how mean were they? and they didnt even help claudia out by going to talk to her teacher or whatever. and mr zorzi was a jerk. he didnt even listen to claud, just believed shawna didnt cheat and that claudia did cos she wasnt the brightest student in the world. i like when they broke into shawnas locker and found some moldy orange or something. and how they found the note. and Mary Anne was sort of a b*tch for thinking that claudia actually cheated. nice friend. loved how kristy yelled at her. and janine was nice in this book . loved how she helped claud. if mimi were alive, she would have stuck up for claud.

I used to love this book as well, although Claudia was incredibly stupid when it came to her ideas for getting Shawna to fall into her own trap. Oooh, I'm going to use "cheat" and "lie" a lot in a sentence and Shawna is bound to flush with embarrassment and confess her tortured soul! And as for the re-enactment Claudia's parents claimed to believe her when Claudia swore she didn't cheat, but their willingness to drop the subject and allow their already-academically-struggling daughter to get an F in math kind of indicates otherwise. I too hated Mary Anne in this book. And I hated the fact that Claudia returned the note to Shawna's locker. She could've told Mr Zorzi she found it on the floor.

It was Claudia and Dawn that broke into the locker, right? Didn't they have a lookout in the hallway too. Stacey? Those were the three badasses of the BSC.
It was hard to feel sorry for Claudia when she insisted on taking care of the problem herself instead of having her parents talk to the teacher and fix the problem within a day. Janine was cool, but why'd she wait so long to go to the principal?

I agree. Mr. Zizmore was a jerk. He's not supposed to just single out who he feels was the culprit. He should have had them re-take the test.

I'm gonna revive this thread because I think there's a lot more to be said about it, or at least because I want to say something about it I think this is one of my least favorite books, actually. I hated the unfairness of it all, I really didn't like how Claudia didn't stand up for herself more (it's understandeable maybe, but she should have anyway) I loved Janine in this book, though at least someone with common sense

Totally agree Inge. I was also irritated that Claudia didn't want her parents involved. I would have gone crying (literally - I'm a "Mary Anne" ) to them immediately and they would have charged into the school and defended me. I love this about my parents and it is what bugs me about the BSC books - the kids always hiding things from their parents. Also loved Janine in this book

I've always liked this book, simply because it was one of the first I ever owned. The plot wasn't one of my favorites. I always thought Claudia's sea themed outfit idea was cool, but looking back, she probably looked silly rather than cool!

This book seemed so unfair to me. And I thought that it was stupid how Mr. Zorzi believed Shawna after all she said was I didn't do it. Sure. This book seemed really stupid to me the first time that I read it.

It was stupid how Mr. Zorzi believed Shawna so easily. It didn't seem realistic or ethical as far as what a teacher should be, in my opinion.
Side note I loved Claudia's sea themed outfit as well. I loved how Mrs. Frizzle was referenced. I used to love The magic school bus books when I was a kid.

I'm gonna revive this thread because I think there's a lot more to be said about it, or at least because I want to say something about it I think I created a thread about this one long ago, not knowing that buffykay had already done so. I'll try to look for it and bump it so you can read some more responses, inge...

This book seemed really stupid to me the first time that I read it. Honestly, if I had two students, one a good student and one an apathetic, chronic under-achiever, I would be inclined to believe the Shawna-like student as well.

^ Agreed, but you have to have proof! And he had none, so he should have made them take the test over...

Honestly, if I had two students, one a good student and one an apathetic, chronic under-achiever, I would be inclined to believe the Shawna-like student as well. I agree with mckay. As someone who has taught before, it is easy to make assumptions based on your perception of the student and their attitude. If I had a Claudia (I've had a few - doesn't care, does other things in class, day dreams, doesn't follow directions), and a Shawna (someone who pays attention, is on time, doesn't spend the hour text messaging).. I would probably be more likely to believe that Shawna is not the cheater. Also, previous test scores and not talking or myspacing while I'm talking helps. *rolls eyes* at the myspacers who then immediately raise their hands and ask what they are supposed to be doing. It might be wrong, but ... First Impressions count. In school, in business, etc. I know it's wrong, but I'm also more likely to be nice to the student who show up for class dressed and alert, rather than in their PJs and hung over. I go out at night too you know, and I'm able to get up, take shower, get dressed and be ready to teach at 8 a.m. You should be ready to learn at 8 too, or sign up for a later class. Now, I know that's not Claudia, but sometimes I wonder if her apparel also might have led people to believe that she's not quite as responsible as she really is.

^ Yeah, that's true - she was kind of asking for it based on her past record. Trust is something you have to build up!
She's kind of like the boy who cried wolf.
