^ Me too. More-bidda. Sounds Morbid, haha. I always assumed that's where the name came from. Did they ever say how Karen came up with it? I think it fits Mrs. Porter. ;D

I would think Karen would have explained it in some of her early books. I guess she didn't?

Karen said some "big kids" told her that Mrs. Porter was really a witch named Morbidda Destiny. I forget how old they were, though.

I always get a kind of "witchy" vibe from her, too, and I think Morbidda almost likes it a bit. The "old" kids were probably 9 or maybe 10. ;D

I always saw her as a good person, although maybe a little lonely or eccentric. I can only imagine Karen's reaction if there was a possibility that Dawn was somehow related to Mrs. Porter. It would've made a good mystery.

I am completely modifying this to clarify after Oldhickory's post below. I didn't want to imply I thought poor Morbidda was anything less than a lonely, mis-understood, elderly lady; definitely not a witch, or at least a "bad" one. I do wish the books had at least touched on the fact that so many characters were named John and Elizabeth or were given the last name of Taylor or Porter. As I originally said, I wonder if the reason for the repetitive names was so that (in the writers' minds) "we" might not notice as much or figure that even a small sized town such as Stoneybrook, there'd be bound to be names re-used. Well no need to get into how flawed that logic (if that was the case) was! I think "laziness or didn't think we'd notice or care," is a better answer. Anyway, I love what you said Oldhickory and especially after the kids had lemonade at Mrs. Porters, I thought it was especially cruel that they continued in their behavior toward her. I even think Kristy let the kids (and me) down when she failed to say anything (after the fact) as a way of an apology to Mrs. Porter for the way the kids practically zoomed along as K took Andrew to Mrs. P's bathroom. I still would love to know if Watson invited her to his wedding.

i like morbidda destiny a lot. i really feel for her. even when she minds her own business and sticks to her home, kids call her names and spread rumors about her. karen actively recruits kids to fear mrs porter -- that's a pretty textbook definition of bullying if you ask me. how lonely must her life be.

I've always liked Morbidda Destiny. She's a fun character. I get the feeling that she secretly likes letting the kids believe she's a witch, just to give them some fun and mystery. I like when she gives Karen a new fish.

Mrs Porter seemed to disappear after Ann stopped writing the books. I remember thinking she didn't seem that bad for a woman who was supposed to be a witch. For one thing, there was that time she made the lemonade for the kids. Karen really overreacted about her. I wonder what Mrs Porter would've been like when she was younger? She appears to be a widow, since she's still a "Mrs" instead of being a "Miss" so she's not divorced, and she lives alone.

My mom has been divorced for nearly 20 years and still uses Mrs. Mrs. Porter is also of an older generation that may not like Ms. Miss is for women who have never been married.

I guess I was using logic from another book. I don't know, everyone I know who's divorced has remarried. I get that Mrs Porter is too old to like using "Ms".

She had her moments where she was just a sweet older lady, albeit a tad eccentric (like MJs character Maestro, whom I just love) but honestly, half of the time she did give ppl good reason to be afraid of her, hell, even Mary Anne was kind of unnerved...also MA had mentioned the reason Karen and her friends thought that was because of appearance..and the big kids told Karen she was too, and considering she was only 5 at the time, of course she'd believe it if presented with enough evidence.

I thought she was a nice lady particularly in Karen's Cartwheel. I like that she had this small bonding moment with Karen in the book. She seems lonely and a bit eccentric so visitors would probably make her day a lot better.
