I don't think I saw a thread for this one. Has anyone read it? All in all, I thought it was pretty boring. But it brought me back to second grade when we were doing addition and subtraction. Like Karen, I hated subtraction. Then in third grade, we started with the carrying numbers thing, and I had even more trouble. (It didn't help that around that time I started to need glasses, and I was always squinting at the overhead projector, which added to my frustration ). So I could relate to Karen's subtraction-hating self. Hannie and Nancy really do have eagle eyes. They sit in the back, but I remember in one book Nancy spies Karen drawing in her textbook and tells Ms. Colman, and in this one Hannie sees Karen copying from Ricky. When Ms. Colman asked Ricky if HE had cheated from Karen, Karen should have 'fessed up then. They're husband and wife! TRUST ISSUES! David Michael and his dragon tattoo was lame.

I'm still really bad at subtraction for some reason, especially the carrying numbers. Calculators are my friend. I'm just bad at math in my head. However, I spent every year of middle school and high school a year ahead in math, so... weird. I haven't read this one, either. I need to hit the ebooks and catch up on some Little Sister.

This one seemed a little random to me because Karen never had homework issues before this and didn't really after this. It's like when Claudia's worst subject was math in one book, and then in the next one she was doing ok in math but bombing out in English. At least try to be consistent, ya know?
How did Hannie see Karen cheating? Was Karen hanging out of her seat, and if so then why didn't Ms. Colman notice? I haven't read this in a while.

I've read Ann herself had problems with math, so I thought that's why she made Karen bad in math. But yeah, I didn't expect Karen to procrastinate with her studying so much.
I'm not sure how Hannie saw Karen cheating; maybe Karen did lean over a little too far at times, but she always made a point of saying she "slid" her eyes to Ricky's paper, so I didn't think she was obvious about it at first. Hannie told Karen she saw her cheat, and I totally thought she had told Ms. Colman on her when Ms. Colman at one point told the class they all needed to keep their eyes on their papers. But it turns out that she didn't, so maybe Ms. Colman finally did notice Karen's cheating and just waited for Karen to feel guilty enough to tell her.

This book gives me a headache because I can't stand math. I sympathized with Karen in this book.

^If Karen was smart enough to skip a grade (as she constantly reminds everyone), why should she have to cheat on an elementary math test (or quiz)?

^Well, she skipped a grade because she already knew 1st grade stuff. She still had to learn 2nd grade stuff like everyone else.

Oh! I had forgotten that she skipped in the middle of the school year. I assumed she skipped to second grade at the beginning of the school year like my teachers wanted me to.

I have a feeling the "Karen's bad at math" thing was just thought up as a plot device. I agree with her though...math is not fun! I was always good at it, but it gave me a headache, especially in high school! As far as Hannie seeing Karen cheat, I remember one illustration in the book of Karen with her head turned, spying on Ricky's paper. So maybe Hannie saw her jerk her head over?

I think Hannie definitely did see because in that same illustration I seem to remember Hannie in the background giving Karen a dirty look so it's possible that Hannie did see Karen peek at Ricky's paper.

If Karen was obvious enough for Hannie to notice her then I wonder what Ms. Colman was doing while it was going on. Her desk was like two feet in front of Karen's. I would hope she didn't just let it keep happening until Karen felt guilty enough to fess up.

I remember Karen mentioning she always waited until Ms. Colman's back was turned or she was writing on the board or something. Sneaky!

it was scary having trouble with math when I did, so I can relate to her anxiety issues
I thought the tattoo thing was so dumb, EVERY kid gets a tattoo from a cereal box or the dollar store

Maybe Ms. Colman did know, but wanted Karen to fess up. Maybe Hannie told Ms. Colman already. Karen kept lying and her lies kept getting difficult to get out of.

I'm pretty sure hannie didn't tell, Ms Colman wasn't stupid. It's pretty obvious when two kids sitting next to each other get 88% and the same answers wrong.
