I just read my first "new" BSC books in over a decade last week, (as a reward for finishing my MFA thesis). I read the original series up to Mary Anne and the Memory Garden before the shame of being way too old for this set in.
Mary Anne was my favorite, and I must have been a natural-born contrarian, because I never liked Stacey as much when she was supposedly the most popular. And I was painfully shy and oversensitive, too. I liked Mallory as well but I am a red-haired aspiring writer and admitted dork (complete with glasses abd braces in the middle school version!), so that may be inevitable. (I don't think I've ever worn a jumper with my name on it, though).
I wrote to Ann M Martin when I was about seven, and got a very nice (non-form) letter back, so either she had a super dedicated assistant or I got to her before she got so super-famous. (This would have been about 1989-90). She also sent me two autographed pictures, so I could give one to my best friend, and they were inscribed to us individually. I met the editor for the first 20 books at a panel at my undergrad a few years ago and she was all excited I knew about her BSC connection (from the Ann M. Martin bio!) and said she would tell Ann that little girls who read her books were now becoming dangerously overeducated English majors at swotty liberal arts colleges (I may be paraphrasing a little).
I used to lurk on both the TWOP and Fametracker threads, too. And I totally had a Kid-Kit.
