Oh, well, if we're talking rpg, I adore MA! The MA/Mal post was very, very sweet. On book!MA: I don't much like her, but I do think she had a lot of genuinely nice moments. I think my favourite was when she realised Kristy might be upset by her and Dawn becoming stepsisters, so she slipped Kristy a note. That was really sweet of her.

ugh. i do not likw mary anne. she does have some of my favorite books (MA's makeover in particular) but her character bothers me. she seemed really sweet in the beginning, but after awhile she was way too mean, took things personally, and let her emotions get the best of her.

I really like her as a character, although I find the later Flanderised version of her irritating.

Aw man, I love Mary Anne! I can't believe that I missed this thread! For some reason, I can't believe that Afton's favorites were Mal and Jessi!!

Mary Anne was always my favorite character because I grew up shy like her, but my appreciation of her has definitely grown. I love how passive aggressive she can be - remember those apology notes in #4? I'm not too keen on Rachael Leigh Cook's portrayal of her in the movie, though. She has virtually no plotline aside from the Cokie & Logan misunderstanding, which was quickly solved. She just seemed really monotone and cold (as has been mentioned in the BSC movie thread).

Mary Anne was always my favorite character because I grew up shy like her, but I appreciation of her has definitely grown. Mary Anne is my favorite also...like her, I hate confrontation and high drama also. I love how passive aggressive she can be - remember those apology notes in #4? I remember...that was funny. She didn't actually give out those first notes...she did give out the second ones...she was also very direct in telling her friends to come over for any emergency BSC meeting to work everything out. So, I don't exactly agree that she was passive-aggressive, at least no more than any of her friends. One thing I loved about the BSC was that they worked out conflicts quickly. Unlike many other friend groups, they never let bad feelings or fights fester on and on through several books. I'm not too keen on Rachael Leigh Cook's portrayal of her in the movie, though. I think Rachel did a good job with what she was given...she definitely looked the part of Mary Anne right down to the big brown eyes, except for the missing bangs. She has virtually no plotline aside from the Cokie and Logan misunderstanding, which was quickly solved. True, they didn't give her a strong enough plotline...that I agree with. She just seemed really monotone and cold - as has been mentioned in the BSC movie thread. I don't agree with cold, but I do agree with the monotone part...in the books, sensitive Mary Anne is very emotional and cries easily...the film didn't really capture that too well.

I liked that in the movie she seemed really close to Kristy and believably, reasonably got more and more upset that Kristy put and kept in the difficult position of keeping secrets from everyone else as they (especially Dawn) got angrier with both of them.

^ Agreed on all counts. I watched the movie this weekend and I really like Rachael Leigh Cook's portrayal of Mary Anne. It fits with her characterization that she feels stuck between Kristy and Dawn, but still goes to pretty great lengths to protect Kristy's secret even when other people are mad at her.

Agreed from me also...Rachel was perfect for the part of Mary Anne. The only thing they neglected was the bangs/fringe...in the books, especially after her haircut, Mary Anne always had bangs/fringe. But other than that, she was perfect for the part. So were the other actors, including the parents.
