I love this cover, and I agree that most of the girls look good, particularly Mary Anne and Stacey. For anyone who doesn't like the way Jessi looks, you can always go by the inside illustrations. Clearly, Hodges didn't consult with whoever drew them (or vice versa) because she looks completely different. The way that the girls are all grouped on one side of the fire reminds me of how the Golden Girls would only use three sides of their kitchen table. I know it has to be that way for the benefit of the viewers/readers, but still...all that empty space!

^If they were circled all the way around the fire then we'd no doubt see the just the back of Mallory's head.

Oh yeah, and Mallory should be covered more.

This is nice cover of them. Jessi reminds me of Carlson, from Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Love Claudia's outfit.
Virgo, love your signature.

We used to have a roller rink around here that was a popular Friday night thing for 6th-8th graders, so I can fully get behind the random skate scene here. I cannot get behind blonde girl's outfit of brown leggings and turquoise Hanes sweatshirt. What did a Babysitters Club party with Ann Martin consist of?

My comments from several pages earlier still apply here - I've always liked the covers that just show the girls hanging out, unrelated to the plot specifically. They seem bittersweet somehow, because they're usually juxtaposed with the less-than-happy tagline. I've noticed Kristy wears a lot of primary red, seen here on her turtleneck. Generally I think it doesn't look good. The outfit Claudia's wearing here is really similar to the outfit that came with the Claudia doll (which I had!). That's pretty cool! In both, she's wearing leggings with a vest over a white button-up shirt with rolled up sleeves, with a purple brimmed hat: I wonder if Stacey's wearing the same shirt she wore on #58 Stacey's Choice? The color is slightly different, but it could just be the lighting:

I remember going roller skating at a rink several times and many years later taking summer camp kids to one. I was never too good at skating but it was fun to have wheels that way. The blonde girl is Stacey? is Kristy supposed to be wearing red and Mary Anne in the sweater? I think it would make more sense the other way around because this is a MA book and that would have her more front and center--not wanting her to fall just she'd be more a part of the cover than on the side. The girl wearing the sweater really doesn't look much like either MA or Kristy. Except...I want to say Kristy wore a patterned sweater on one cover...maybe, Kristy's Mystery Admirer. I just looked and Kristy's sweater on that cover is nice, looks like its lit up, but no pattern, maybe I'm making that up. I had a sweatshirt similar to that but in a teal. Weren't there some contests to win a dinner with Ann? Was there also a party one, too? That could have made for a fun and very different storyline to somehow have incorporated in a BSC book about a young fan or two meeting Ann. I don't mean Mal and Henrietta either! ETA: Celaeno, you must have posted just ahead of me. That is cool about Claudia on the cover looking similar to the doll. Thanks for sharing that.

I feel quite sure Mary Anne is the one falling down. Kristy has worn Cosby sweaters on several covers, like the girl on the right on this cover. Plus, I'm sure Mary Anne would be the one who can't skate well!

I actually thought the Kristy model looked somewhat consistent with other covers. And, she's wearing the jeans, turtleneck, sweater uniform.

I think everyone looks pretty on the cover. That's really all I have to add.

Yeah I think everyone looks nice here. I was shocked the first time I saw Mary Anne's exposed midriff! I could see Stacey wearing leggings and a baggy shirt to skate.

Sparklymouse, after reading your post about Kristy's turtleneck, the girl wearing the sweater does look more Kristy-ish though to me a little different than some other covers. I agree on liking the sweater as it does remind me stars and am glad all the girls, even MA seem to be having a good time.

I can't get over how tall Mary Anne would be if she was standing upright. I like that the blurb on the cover goes along with the illustration: nothing beats your friends, but even so...
But I can't help but think that this cover would have been a good one to have Cokie on the cover of. Maybe with Logan and Mary Anne looking on in sadness.
