Well, you don't need to spell to be treasurer. You need to know how to do arithmetic.

^She didn't know how to do that either ... How hard is it to say "It's Monday. Everyone give me a dollar." ? I wonder, when Stacey gave out money for kid kits and stuff, did they have to bring the change back? Kristy seems like the type to demand receipts for everything. If not then the treasury should always be a whole number, unless the occasional pizza threw it off. Adding whole dollars shouldn't take a mathematical genius.

I'm sure they had to bring the change back. Otherwise, that's stealing from your friends.

One thing I liked about this book was when Jessi was talking to her mom about the new elections the BSC was going to have and was basically trying to get her mom to tell her how she should vote. I like that because it's something realistic for an eleven-year-old -- unsure of what to do? Ask Mom!
I love pets, but I really would NOT want to have so many of them. Just arranging for my one dog to be boarded at the vet is enough of a pain. I wouldn't want to have umpteen animals and be so tied to the house like the Mancusis were. It's mentioned in the book that they hardly ever get away because it's so hard to find someone to care for all their animals.

I wasn't interested in reading this book but I bought it and read it anyway. It wasn't really good but it turned out to be better than I expected.
I really like Kristy but she seemed like a total jerk in this book. You know with the whole fight and all.
Oh, and I thought it was a little unrealistic for the Mancusis to hold an eleven-year old responsible for their dozens of pets. I know they didn't have a choice but their original pet-sitter should've gotten them a replacement sitter since he/she was the one who canceled in the first place.

Before commenting on the story itself: On Page 33 Lucy Newton is said to be 8 months old! If she was born in November (of "last" year according to BSC World) that would make it July "Now." No school, out of 8th Grade! Just realized that for the first time. Just re-read this one and totally agree with the majority that I would not want to pet sit for the Mancusis. I love dogs, wish well for other pets/animals but especially snakes, forget it! I love (so funny) how Afton wondered if Jessi would start to smell after a while from the animals and that is just so funny. The Mancusis' for sure must have reeked. Yuck. For me the funniest part was when MA and Jessi jumped onto the chair when Barney was coming. I wouldn't have been in the house with a snake to begin with but probably would have done the same thing. Also, at the bottom of Page 95, it says: "I knew I'd still have mallory...." (The "M" is lowercase)! Poor Mal. Dawn note, page 17, "Well sometimes Dawn doesn't since she's so into health food." This is of course in reference to the BSC Members enjoying Claud's junk food. Does this mean that there are times when Dawn DOES join them? (I mean besides pretzels or crackers)? I always got a kick out of in #12 when Dawn ate 3 marshmallows to "put it to" Claudia for ditching the Meeting. I don't care for marshmallows but they probably have more sugar, than a candy bar. Maybe Dawn secretly did love sweets. Question: On Page 124 at the very bottom, Jessi tells us "Mal didn't mind." The Club Members were going over to the Mancusis to see the hamster. Why, exactly, would Mal mind? Unless she and J had planned to go over there after the voting themselves? Oh she did, sorry. On Page 116, Mal said that maybe she and J could check on the hamster after the meeting. J said maybe the whole club could. To which Mal "made a face." I get this was in context to thinking a fight might occur during the voting and wanting to escape afterwards, but weirdly worded. Oh I loved Jessi's talk with her mom too. For once, one of the Sitters talked with their parents about a problem amazing! And have always thought Mal and Jessi should have wanted to have some type of title after their names besides "Junior Officer." When parents ask what they mean, wouldn't they be embarrassed to say the title reflects the fact they can only sit during the day? Jessi, could have been titled, "Go to Sitter for either kids, animals or plants." Mal, maybe because she seemed to be the person to automatically help organize kids at the beginnings of camps or group acitivities, either "Special Event Coordiniator."

Yeah, I think Jessi had already invited Mal, so she had to make sure Mallory was ok that she was opening up the invitation. I remember relationships being pretty jealous at that age, so you always had to make sure your friends were ok whenever you wanted to invite others and stuff. I thought Jessi and Mal's relationship was really sweet in this book. They call each other a lot. It actually feels like it makes sense why they're friends. It was annoying how EVERYONE was terrified of snakes in this one. For goodness sake, even Mrs. Ramsey, a grown woman, shrieked in the vet's office when she saw one. I like snakes, so I wouldn't have any problem caring for one (heck, even feeding it live food). I'm surprised we didn't see any of the other BSC girls being ok with Barney. I liked that Jessi was narrating this book that was basically Claudia, Mary Anne, and Dawn vs Kristy...it was interesting to read an unbiased account of it. I also think it's funny how Jessi and Mal try so hard to not step on any toes, since OMG it's such a privilege to just be allowed to hang out in a 13-year-old's room. I also like that this book calls Kristy out on her bossiness!

^Well said, Celaeno.
Afraid I disagree about the snake though. When I lived in the dorms in college, snakes became a fad. I always felt so creepy, not happy about the thought of them being so close to me. In fact a roommate of mine even had one, despite my protests as did a couple friends. (Friends there business of course to have the things but I thought since our room was TINY, the roommate could have made sure I was okay with the snake before getting it).

No school, out of 8th Grade! Just realized that for the first time. Except that they were still in school in this book. Not sure what month of the year it was supposed to be when it took place, though. But I remember that Jessi had to go to the Mancusis' house before school as well as after. Also, Jackie Rodowsky's class election for who would take care of the rabbit was the sitting subplot for this book.

One other comment on this that just struck me, first why would it make sense for the Mancusis to have Jessi over the night before their trip to introduce her to their menagerie and give out instructions? For an animal brood that big, I'd think they'd have wanted to talk with and meet her since until Jessi arrived at their house they didn't know who she was ahead of time.
Also, Jessi walks the dogs before school and after school. I guess during the day or night they don't have to "go?" I realize they probably have a doggie door out to the yard, it just came across as missing that info to me on this read. As I get deeper into the book, it seems every time Jessi is later to walk the dogs, the more ready they are for their walk, so maybe they don't have any way out which, to me, seems plain mean.

OKay, the dogs: If school starts around 8am, Jessi could have easily finished the morning walk around 7:30am. That would leave the dogs alone for around 6 hours, and MOST well-trained dogs can hold it that long. Is it an ideal situation? Probably not. It IS possible, though.

My brother's dog can hold it for up to 8 hours (usually ). I think the stretch between morning and after school would have been fine, but the time between after school and the next morning would be way too long.

^Shrug, I still think it was not the best doggie parenting to leave them for 6 hours without access to the yard. ITA, that the time between afternoon and the next morning would have been much more unlikely to have worked. Also, with that many animals, what if one had gotten sick during the night or something. IMO, seemed like a house/pet sitter would have worked better.

I agree, expecting a dog to hold it from the time after school (assuming 4 PM or so) until the next morning is not very nice for the dog. I agree with zoar, a house-sitter/pet sitter combo would have been better. With so many different kinds of animals alone in the house all day, you never know what might happen.
There are so many things I never think about until we start talking about them on these boards!
