^ I always thought that part was pretty unrealistic that Kristy would actually sign the whole message. That made no sense as it would have taken forever ;D I think the code was a good idea but should have been described as being shorter. Usually I don't pay attention to logistics of things like this but for some reason, this has always bothered me.

I love the idea of the code too and agree it should have been shorter somehow! Actually, Richard just should have gotten a grip and let Mary Anne talk on the phone once in awhile, even if it was non-school related.. Anyway, I was always jealous about how Mary Anne and Kristy's rooms faced one another. I thought that must have been so cool. My best friend lived next door to me too and I always wished her room faced mine so we could have a flashlight code. (We did have a "mailbox" which was a brick in between our yards where we left each other notes, though.)

A mailbox, like in Little Women?

I love the part where they're eating dinner and Kristy refuses the Chinese food Watson brings over. She makes herself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (which she nibbles into the shape of a snowman), mouths off to Watson, gets sent to her room, and protests, "But I haven't finished eating my DELICIOUS dinner yet!"
Sounds like a typical 12 year old to me. For some reason, that part always cracks me up, and I have to stop and laugh for a while.

I would have eaten the Chinese food while giving Watson the stink eye. No need to make my belly suffer.
Kristy also got in trouble in school in this one, although that was pretty much a misunderstanding. Something tells me if she hadn't had the BSC to focus on then her energy would have gotten her into trouble pretty consistently.

I don't know about that, Sparklymouse. The girls are supposed to be so good that I doubt it's common for them to get into much trouble.

I think that the goodness came later, with the ghosties. In the earlier books they're more average.

I didn't really mean Kristy would be a "bad" girl. She just seemed a bit hyperactive, and without the club's structure to keep her occupied (and if her mother hadn't gotten re-married) then I think she would have acted differently.

I was thinking of the contrast that Ann set up between the BSC girls and the girls who formed the Babysitters' Agency in #3, that the BSA girls were the sort that would get in a lot of trouble but not Kristy et al.

I think that the goodness came later, with the ghosties. In the earlier books they're more average. I agree. I think they suffered the same fate as Mickey Mouse. People realized how popular the BSC was with young girls and decided they needed to be good role models. Therefore they were unusually good and less interesting to watch.

^ I very much agree. Kristy in the begining did seem like the type to get into trouble, not cause she's a bad kid, just cause she speaks her mind. And I love the snowman snadwich bit too!

Personally...I'd prefer a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to Chinese food.

Agree that Kristy was a little bit rebellious in the beginning too.. Not really bad rebel like the BSA smoking on jobs etc.. but remember she did beat kids up in primary school!... Or at least offer too Also agree with fairy3lf2, that the BSCers would have been seen as role models by the public. I think that's why the series stayed so innocent. And the books were designed for young kids werent they? Not necessarily teens? so I guess they couldnt have 7 or 8 year olds reading about the girls getting drunk at parties all the time or things like that. And the one time they did write about that (Sunny sneaking to a party and getting drunk in CD) the writer impressed upon the .. I cant think of the word.. I suppose the seriousness of situations like that, like they dont always turn out for the best, and its not very responsible blah blah... Anyway, back to Kristy's Great Idea, I very much love this book. I suppose because its the one that started them all! I dunno, theres something about the early books that I love... the quality of the writing, the characterisation, the plot lines that arnt completely unrealistic.
