I think this is one of the best written ones.

I like this book a lot. I like Kristy in it, and a lot of times I don't like Kristy very much. But from her perspective, her life is changing and she isn't sure how to deal with it. The BSC was a good idea and made her closer with her friends too, so that was good for her.
I also like how "real" the girls are in this book. They aren't perfect, they aren't going out of their way to plan events for kids, etc. I liked that they all grew as characters in the book as well.

A lot of people have said that they like the fact that this book doesn't have "chapter two." I think one reason is that it actually follows one of the most given writing tips out there: Show, don't tell! We don't need a whole chapter devoted to giving us all the details because a lot of the events in the first chapter or two tell us a lot of important things about the characters. For example, the opening scene of Kristy jumping out of her desk when the bell rings tells us that she tends to act before she thinks, resulting in her being in trouble. Mary Anne chewing on her nails and saying that she'll be an old woman before her father lets her wear nail polish tells us both that she's a shy and nervous type of person and that her father is strict. Kristy wanting to play football with her older brothers shows that she's a bit of a tomboy who likes sports. See what I mean? The later chapter twos were really just a lazy form of writing (though understandable considering they were ghostwritten and published very frequently).

It doesn't have a chapter two because the whole book basically is just one really long chapter two. To be honest I hardly ever read this book.

The later chapter twos were really just a lazy form of writing (though understandable considering they were ghostwritten and published very frequently). Plus, the chapter twos were seen as a way for anyone to be able to jump into the series at any point without having to read every book that had come before. The chapter twos annoyed me as a kid because I had started with the first book and read them in order, so I didn't need the whole chapter two explanation! I got to the point where I just impatiently skimmed them.

Other series did it more artfully, I have to admit; you can pick up the Betsy-Tacy books and grasp who everyone is without the infamous chapter two.

You would think that Watson would spend some time with Karen and Andrew when he wasn't busy.

It's funny, we see some of both- he seems to spend more time with the whole family in the LS books.

Yeah. In regular BSC we need baby-sitting plots, so we see them more when they're charges. But they don't seem to get sit for as much is LS.

I noticed something very strange when i was rereading this book yesterday... that I hadn't noticed before, and I don't think it's in any other books when the girls are in seventh grade.
It dawned on me that the girls seemed to have the same teacher for the whole day... in seventh grade. Either that or AMM had a strange way of writing things.
For example:
Claudia says Stacey is in her CLASS. She doesn't say which class, and if she meant they were in the same grade, wouldn't she have said our class? I know Claudia is kind of dumb, but .... HAVE YOU SEEN HER SPELLING IN THIS BOOK? She's not that dumb yet.
Another thing: Kristy obviously has mr. redmond at the end of the day. The next day she turns in her composition on decorum before school because she doesn't want him reading it while they other kids are filing into class. After he reads it over and gives his approval SHE GOES TO HER SEAT. When I was rereading it yesterday that confused me to no end and i had to go over and reread it to make sure I was seeing what i was seeing.
Claudia wears her (felt? I don't have book at me I'm at my dad's house right now borrowing his computer) hat outside on the playground (which is a whole nother thing since they're in an actual middle school) and Kristy said that her TeacheR (singular) wouldn't let her wear it in class.
It didn't sound like any of the baby-sitters except for Claudia and Stacey were in any of the same classes... and it's a very small middle school. .. and it dawned on me that they had to have been in the same class all day... at least for this book, because certain things just weren't adding up.
I thought this was very odd, AMM isn't THAT old, and she wisened up in the next few books. At least in the US, unless you're in a school that's K-8, you switch classes when you reach middle school (grades 6-8) or Junior high (7-9)

Hmm, I never noticed any of that.
My elementary school was grades 3-8 and we stayed in the same class all day. However, I know other schools in the area where the students switched classes.

I noticed the same thing when I was rereading recently.

I never noticed that in the book, but now that is going to bother me. I started having muliple teachers in sixth grade, I had at least six a day.

I noticed that they seemed to have only one teacher but never gave it much thought. Probably because when I first started to read the books, I was in elementary school and only had one teacher all day, so the idea of changing classes every hour just didn't occur to me.

^That is probably why I didn't notice it as first either. I was in third grade when I started reading the books so I just had one teacher.
