Had a quick read through this book today and had a new thought - how lovely would it be if Vanessa also went to Riverbend eventually? Perhaps on a writing scholarship? It seems like a school that would suit her well, plus her and Mallory could have some bonding time throughout their teenage years.

^ Great idea! A Vanessa/Mallory spinoff series where they'd aged a few years would have been fun.

And Mallory and Vanessa are competing for the same writing prize at the school, bringing out our much speculated sibling rivalry

^Yes, I'd actually thought before that maybe Vanessa would also want to go to Riverbend when she reached sixth grade, and that Mallory's immediate reaction wouldn't be, "Oh, yay, sisterly bonding time!" but more that she'd be worried having another Pike kid around would cramp her style.

This is random but I always thought Mal and her roommate would get cold with the window open a crack in the late fall/ November.

Vanessa wouldn't probably room with her like the old times.

I'm sure this has been mentioned on the boards somewhere, though I can't find where, so I'll post this in here for anyone who hasn't seen it. In the new cover version of #30 (Mary Anne and the Great Romance), AMM writes in her letter in the back:

^ Irony in that!
Anyway Riverbend sounds like a school I would go to. A math class just dedicated to the kind I would use in real life? That would be the best kind of math class!

I loved this book. If only we'd seen more of Mallory at Riverbend! And if this series had had more actual character development rather than the time warp, it might've been the better for it.
And yay, an Indian character with nary a mention of the word 'exotic', to boot! Smita Narula <3, anyone?
I'm glad Mal seems to be making good friends and is spending some time trying new things, away from the shadow of her family. That said, Riverbend did strike me as rather Rudolf-Steiner-esque.

I really liked this book, but it always made a me a little sad because it was the last Mallory book.

^I agree. I felt like Mallory finally had a positive change in her life but we never got to read too much about it. Though I will always wish her parents had (to our knowledge) at least stood up for her or at least tried to deal with the situation at SMS. I remember we had this discussion way back when but Mal really could have also gone to Kelsey Middle School or even found out about scholarships to Shannon's School or if Stoneybrook Academy went through 8th grade, there, too. I know this is O/T but does anyone know (I apologize if I've asked this before, I think I have) if Karen's school is K-8th? I know in one book at least 6th graders are mentioned. In any case, I would have much preferred another Mal book to ones that followed this such as Little Liar and Fire.
