In the book Karen's Ghost, it's said that Ben Brewer's son WAS Karen's grandfather.

I'm fairly indifferent to this book, but I have to say it's the book that most perfectly illustrates how much the BSC has warped my life.
About a year and a half ago, my dad had a heart attack. I was the one home with him, I called the ambulance, etc. While sitting in the waiting room, between bouts of panic and tears, I kept thinking of Kristy and Watson. And then thinking, "I've got to post this to the BSC board" (a different one, obviously) "when I get home." I did, too.

At least you didn't read this book on the day your dad found out he had to have 5 bypasses - that's what I did because I didn't know what it was about. Of course, I think of dad and his situation every time I read the book (less so on every reread). The worst, though, was I read Karen's Granddad - nice sounding title, right? - on the day my dad actually had the surgery. That one really got me worked up. Hope your dad is okay, mckay. Heart problems are scary.

A bit late, but... Thanks, and he's fine. Still has some problems, but nothing too awful, considering. Your signature is so cute!

Thanks for the compliment, McKay! I plan on changing it every 100 posts. I'm trying to decide who to "sit" for next - maybe the Kuhns. They are pretty easy clients. So are Perkins.

I especially loved the "Get Well Quick" basket the kids put together for Watson. I cracked up when Emily suggested they put Boo-Boo in it too. ;D

^Haha, I loved that!
Ditto to all of that. I also like how after he came home Watson would get all misty and emotional at a moment's notice ;D
I'm sure I remember the Mrs. Marshall subplot being discussed elsewhere, but OMG I hated her in this. And where was Mrs. Phillips, the mother of those kids that were always over, and why didn't she offer to also pay the babysitter? Three of the five kids were hers! Classy. I could relate to Claud and Stacey making a big deal about walking out on Mrs. Marshall, scared and with their faces burning. I know that's exactly how I would have felt if I had to confront an adult at their age. I was a Mary Anne, having an anxiety attack at the mere thought!

Was Mrs. Marshall as bad in any of the other books? This book really colored my feelings for her. Did they ever sit for her again?

^I don't remember her being awful in any other books.

Right, me neither. She's pretty prominent in Mallory and the Dream Horse, and I liked her just fine in that, and has a small mention in Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls, since I'm pretty sure that's Nina on the cover.

^ Yeah, I thought she was pretty out of character in this one. I really didn't like her in it and almost thought of her as a totally different, separate person from the usual Mrs. Marshall.

I just read this book the other day for the first time, and yeah, Mrs. Marshall really pissed me off in that one, but I think the BSC could have handled it better by warning her first as they discussed.

Okay, I just read for the first time and I ITA with everything. I liked this book and I since I could overlook certain things (like the lack of communication) I couldn't find anything to really snark on. Except I don't understand why they feel the need to throw a party at the drop of a hat. And wearing their best clothes for family dinner? I kind of understand that for what the family had been through they wanted something to cheer themselves up, but, like, watching a funny movie does it for me. Why all the prep for just the family?
I have to overlook certain things in these books in order to enjoy them fully, like Nannie moving in and out of her apartment to easily. I simply tell myself that something happened "off screen" to make it happen.
I'm glad they aknowledged that Mrs. Marshall wasn't being herself. I think it saved her break from character a from being too unrealistic. I thought it was weird that Mrs. Phillips wasn't at the house ready to go to jazzercise with Mr. M but that her three kids were already there. The BSC should've just spoken up after the first incidence and nicely mentioned the 4 kids 2 sitters rule. Even if they assumed all the parents knew it they could've given Mrs. M a reminder and brushed off the incidence. Dawn could've just done after Mrs. M got home. But, I do understand that 13 a girl may not be confident enough to speak up to an adult. I can totally see Stacey doing it. (I kind of go into Stacey and adult in her thread.) I'm also glad to see the club learning about how to run a business. They realize that they probably never told anyone about the 4 kids 2 sitters rule. As far as asking how many kids they will be sitting for during phone calls, I can see how they would expect to only watch the kids of the parents that are hiring them, especially if that's the norm. I think it's half the parents duty to make sure the sitters know how many kids will be there if things change.

^ Agree about it being at least half the parents' duty to inform the sitters. That is usually one of the questions that the girls ask new clients, it seems, so since Mrs. Marshall wasn't a new client, they shouldn't really be expected to assume that anything would be different. How old were the other kids? It's been a while since I've read and I can't remember.
