@ aln1982: I TOTALLY SAY THE CANE AND DISABLED GIRL TOO! Especially how Jackie is looking at Ashley - almost an expression he might use while looking at a disabled person (?) And the clothes LOOK like they might be worn by a fragile, disabled person.
Phew. Now I am tired of disabled talk, haha. And typing the word disabled. It's a funny word...

The farrow quote was too awesome to not iconise. I have no Photoshop skills whatsoever, so this was the best I could manage.

I hated how that girl was so snobby for her art. She really thought highly of herself. Pride comes before the fall.
BTW. LOL @ Claudia's spelling skills. Well, pobody's nerfect.

Man, this book made it hard to side with any of the characters, because everyone was obnoxious! I did like the introduction of Ashley though. I thought she was very interesting, and a lot more developed than most other minor characters. I wish she could have made some more appearances throughout the series.

i have a couple of cousins who are really into drawing, and when we were younger they used to give me crap because my interests were always changing. i hated how they looked down on me for wanting to explore everything, and i guess it's for this reason that i dislike ashley so much. it can't be healthy to be so obsessed with something, especially at that age when she should be out with her friends. when she's old and nobody knows her outside of her art, she's going to wish she hadn't been an awful jerk.

Oh, and this passage made me laugh. Claudia is calling Kristy on the phone:
It made me laugh because I thought it sounded more like a fanfic parodying how obnoxious Karen is. Ha.

Haha, I love that passage. I like how Claudia totally cuts Karen off before she can get all revved up and chattering nonstop.

I agree with Caelano, that Ashley should have come back in later books more. She's mentioned at the beginning of #13, but anywhere else?

She's in Winter Vacation, Claudia and the Bad Joke, and CK, Live from WSTO.

I agree that EVERYONE was obnoxious in this book. Interestingly enough, the one who seemed the least obnoxious was Claudia (who's usually near the top of the obnoxious list ). Ashley was a self-important snot. The BSC were judgmental and not at all understanding. This is one of those "happy medium" books where a character has to learn to strike a delicate balance between two things. But... Claudia already had a good balance between the sitting and art. Oh well. I liked this book anyways. This is another one where the girls' behavior is petty and flawed, and for whatever reason, I enjoy reading that. It makes them more real, I guess. And I should admit, on the newer cover, I think Ashley looks pretty cute.

I wonder if her clothes would seem as odd to today's tennagers.

I hadn't seen the newer cover, but just looked and there was no change from the old one. I like that they didn't update Ashley's clothes.

I agree with so many of you that I find it difficult to really like anyone in this book! However, and this is creepy, several years ago I had a best friend who only had one friend, me! It ended up going very badly as I wanted to hang out with other people and have a good time. Funnily enough, she left little notes in my bedroom about how awful I was because I went out with other people and didn't see her everyday (at the time we were roommates). We were in our mid 20's so good grief!!!!! I guess this means that I can relate to Claudia on that one but I can see Ashley being this type of girl as she grows up!
Also, there was a mention of Jackie's head as a bust in the art show. However he was only halfway done so how creepy would that have been! I imagine him with one eye and half a nose and mouth while the other side is just a mound of clay!
