Overall, I didn't mind this book - although I thought the ending was rushed (although this is pretty common for BSC books). I would have liked to have seen more of Mary Anne successfully playing her father back, since that was the whole reason she took the Elf-job in the first place!

But if Mary Anne returned some of the presents she bought, then we wouldn't have this book. you know, i would have been okay with that :]

I wish that when I was younger someone would have explained the whole interest thing to me!
I guess I don't have much to add to this one. It may have been interesting if Angela had moved to Palo City and joined the CA diaries.
I am through with Dawn now in the BSC books??? It's like a tease - this one has to be it b/c she annoys the crap out of me. I'm surprised MA didn't take her gift back in her anger and rage against Dawn being different!

I think (hope) Dawn is finally gone for good. Too bad, MA isn't. I'm starting to re-read, and lol will probably be done very quickly since this one isn't exactly a favorite. You know what's really weird? On page 7, MA and Kristy are in "Stuff 'N Nonsense." MA has chosen two sets of earrings and has just found the "matching necklace."
Kristy: "I think the earrings are enough."
MA: "Please! Dawn will love this. I have to buy it for her."
MA has now resorted to begging Kristy for approval? A couple sentences later, MA gets angry with Kristy because she (MA) doesn't think K is happy enough about Dawn's arrival.
Someone said way upthread that MA thought about using her elf head to hit Dawn. I don't remember that at all. I guess I'll have to skim to find out. I'm still anti-violence for any reason, but hey this is fictional and at this point it is tempting!
Edited to add, I found the above, it's on page 71. MA, Logan, and Dawn are riding the bus to the mall. Logan and Dawn wanted to go Christmas shopping. Logan makes the mistake of asking Dawn how she liked high school. (At Vista the 8th graders are grouped with the older kids)
Dawn then gushed on and on about how awesome her school year had been so far. "It's so great not being in with the little kids anymore," she told him. Was she really turning into such a maturity slob? If I'd had my elf head, I would have hit her with it. (I'd have liked to, anyway. Though, I suppose that would have definitely been immature).
One very final comment on this book, I think this was the one where Kristy gave Mal the Club Notebook to write in. No, that's nothing special. MA told us the notebook was a spiral. So it was just a regular old notebook as opposed to binder.
MA did have one redeming moment at Friendly's. She and Logan are eating lunch. Dawn has abandoned them to go shopping. MA says, "Now we can eat our vile, loathsome animal product in peace." I WISH MA had said that to Dawn. I really do.

I'm kind of wondering why they made this book into a glittery cover, and not the other Christmas-themed BSC books. I remember when I first read this, I was a bit too old to still be reading BSC books (maybe by a year or two). BUT, I remember having it at school or mention it or something, and some of my girlfriends who used to read the series wanted to read it after seeing the cover. Today, that memory kind of makes me laugh. Like the glitter had so much appeal to them.

First off, the girl (I'm assuming) who owned this book before me wrote all over the cover in black, permanent marker. I guess she didn't like Mary Anne's short hair because she drew in long hair on the cover, and then even put pigtails on the side (so long hair WITH pigtails...it looks weird). She also drew in long hair on Mary Anne on the photo of her on the left side of the book, too.
Inside it says "The Secret Life of Mary Anne Spider" Spier is crossed out and SPIDER is written in. I'm assuming because the girl thinks spier looks like spider...
In the back, under the Portrait Collection books, the girl named Kiona (she wrote it in the back of the book) wrote MALLERY and JESSIA . I guess she really wanted them to have a Portrait Collection book! Also, it's said that in 5th grade she can't spell Mallory or Jessica, and their names that show up throughout the book!

^ It looks weird, too. Imagine Mary Anne with her "original" long hair (pre-book 60) and then ADD pigtails on either side of her long hair. "Mary Anne Spider".

Now that I have an organized list of the timeline of the BSC, divided into separate years of 8th grade, I find it surprising to see that toward the end of the series they included a Christmas book most years (eg Mallory's Christmas Wish, Happy Holidays Jessi, Secret Life of Mary Anne Spier, Christmas Chiller). I find it strange, since at the beginning of the series they didn't mention Christmas often (I'm guessing they did that to make it less obvious 8th grade kept looping). But anyway, I'm very glad for the Christmas books later in the series, as I do love Christmas.

Maybe they thought more holiday books would increase sales?

I think in later years, there was more of "books coming out in a certain month take place during that month," and it's weird to have a December book with no mention of holidays.

Maybe they thought more holiday books would increase sales? I agree. I think Ann was also more discreet about mentioning the holidays. She was more apt to write about celebrating the New Year.

Hmm, the only New Years one I can think if is Dawn's Big Date... Also, Ann wrote about the holidays in the pre-8th grade books.
