^Is it Garrett's? My coworker brought back some caramel corn when she was in Chicago for work, and it was REALLY GOOD. I think it's expensive, but if I ever go to Chicago, I'm definitely hitting one.

Ugh, Dawn. Can't even get past page 9 before she makes a judgmental comment about people who eat junk food somehow deserving to have acne and greasy hair. I bet that made girls with acne who read the books feel great about themselves. The exact comment was "They might have good hair and skin if they didn't eat so much junk food." Seriously? Not cool.

Hee hee, the book is so bad, it's good. Funny, too, though it probably wasn't intended to be. I just love the outfits and the drastic makeovers of Dawn. I like the cover quite a bit, especially MA's pretty braid. And the subplot is good, too. I hated Sara and her friend bullying her brother about his weight. And his parents were jerks. I felt bad for Norman. Were the Hills mentioned again?

Yeah, they were mentioned again in a later book. Norman was supposed to have lost some weight. Unfortunately, I don't remember which one.

I'm surprised I haven't posted on this one yet! It's one of my favorite BSC books.
I found it so entertaining with the clothes and makeup and hairstyles and all. If I ever pulled out that stuff like dawn did, my mom wouldn't be so happy to say the least! As a kid, I did daydream dressing up like those, but I never tried it! Too awful.

I still laugh at the postcard that 13-year-old Dawn sent 13-year-old Lewis: the back of a chair with a sexy pair of women's legs hanging over it in high-heels. Since this was written in the early '90s, I also picture it to be "'90s-fied".

Now I'm thinking of an adult Dawn reading 50 Shades of Grey or something before the rest of her friends do

Just read it and very mixed reactions ... interesting plot, the writing style sometimes entertaining and sometimes ridiculous, some of the characters pretty out-of-character (Kristy more extreme than usual although on the other hand Claudia's spelling wasn't so bad). Dawn going so far after Travis was questionable, although that's an interesting quirk. The conflict between her and Mary Anne was good without either character being OOC or made to be the villain.

I don't think Mary Anne was being mean to Dawn and really wasn't trying to be, she had just understandably gotten a big head that she was (especially compared to Dawn) The One Who Knew About Relationships and was trying to help her but it came out seeming not very considerate (although part of that was Dawn was pretty inconsistent, to her and to herself, about how much she wanted to change).
Dawn getting snarky with a teacher and otherwise wanting to be bad-cool was entertaining but pretty much came out of nowhere and also wasn't followed up later.

The end of the book Norman tells Dawn his parents stopped buying junk food. How did it take them that long? He's a kid and it's a lot harder for him to get junk food if they don't buy it. This is how I lost the weight I gained while pregnant with my 1.5 year old. I had to stop buying junk food so I wouldn't be tempted.
His family was horrible to him and I think he probably coped by eating which made it worse. He would probably benefit from therapy to help him cope without binge eating but I can't see his parents doing that.
Sarah was a brat and the parents allowed her to play with Elizabeth who was a horrible bully to Norman. Elizabeth was bragging to Dawn about calling Norman "Enormous Hill". Norman's parents should have talked to Elizabeth's parents about her bullying Norman at their house or not allowed her to come over. Poor kid doesn't even get to feel safe at his own house.

You know, Dawn was pretty OOC. For someone who's always described as a real individual, she seems to always be changing herself for someone. It's not just here. She did it in Dawn and the Older Boy, too. It's always about a guy.
Liked the subplot about the Hills, though. I always liked Norman. The thing is, it's pretty clear everyone focusing on getting him to lose weight is detrimental, because it makes him feel self-conscious so he comfort eats to make himself feel better. I struggle with my weight, too, so I understand how Norman feels. But it's true - healthy eating and exercise is the way to go. I now eat breakfasts that are high-protein and low-calorie (eggs, and sometimes toast or baked beans with it), and I've lost weight from it.

I think Dawn is "an individual" only compared to other club members-she doesn't wholeheartedly follow or necessarily get along with Kristy, she's far from shy and though she has a best friend it's very different from and maybe less close than Claudia & Stacey who the other members may think is a more traditional best friendship.

I think Dawn is "an individual" only compared to other club members-she doesn't wholeheartedly follow or necessarily get along with Kristy... I say she gets on with Kristy fine. I actually think Dawn and Kristy have lots in common, but Dawn is more laid back. And the other club members are not necessarily 'followers' of Kristy; they do speak up when there's something to say, even quiet Mary Anne. And even though Kristy is the leader of the pack, she's respectful of her friends' opinions even if they differ from hers, which is why the club runs so well and their friendship is so strong.
