Lol at the Jell-O dropping talk. Maybe because Claudia is a popular kid and not into school and Trevor writes for the literary magazine, he didn't think she would know his name?
I'm feeling nostalgic about this book all of a sudden. It's one of the most comforting books in the series to me, probably because of the type of weather that's in it. It has a great opening line. "The evening was gloomy and windy, with rain streaming down from heavy clouds that blocked the moon."

^ I love it for the same reason. I always remember how Janine comments on how it's late in the season for thunderstorms.

I also like how they reminisce about it in Bad Luck Mystery.

I cannot believe I never commented on this book - seeing as it is my absolute favorite in the series. I think it is one of the funniest books in the entire series and like booboo it is the most comforting to me also. It is the one book that I wouldn't let my mother give away when she went through to give all my BSC books away years and years ago and for the longest time it was in the attic until I fell in love with the BSC all over again. I am not even a huge Halloween fan, but it seems so much better in the book with all the 'spooky' events that happen. I just love the alarms and the red ribbon and Alan Gray ... especially Alan Gray.

I love this one too. I think the one thing I noticed here that I never had before was a reference to watching the love boat reruns! Hahaha for some reason I just can't see kristy or Claudia ever doing that!
I still think it was ooc for kristy to say yes, but then again I think maybe this book has her true character and later on she becomes the big feminist tomboy without real depth.

^I confess to loving the Love Boat as a kid. For some very strange reason I thought Doc and someone else was very good looking. Maybe I just liked the idea of a romance involving water even then. Back to the story, now that you mention it, Kristy did accept awfully quick. I wonder if the police had not been present and Alan had normally asked her to the dance if she would have agreed? I still wish the two of them had become friends in the series. I did come to (semi) like Bart but I guess Alan represented the early BSC to me, which is why I had hoped for that pairing. One thing I did think of while reading this last night, was what exactly did Alan hope to gain by spying on Kristy? Was he that lovesick he wanted a "peek" at her? Also, what do you think he would have done if the police had not caught him? I also never quite got what Alan and Trevor's hang up calls accomplished other than (probably) knowing they were scaring Kristy and Claudia. I "get" both were shy about asking the girls out. I can understand calling/hanging up a few times before finally asking, it just seemed to go on for quite a while. This is still my 2nd favorite of the series and the only book I have no trouble starting right over after finishing.

^ I highly doubt Alan had any inappropriate intentions in spying on Kristy. He liked her and didn't know how to get the across in a particularly mature way. They WERE only 12, after all, and Alan wasn't presented as being particularly mature at any point in the series!

there are some other boys in the series who i could picture peeking into windows to see a naked girl or something, but in this book alan just comes across as really dumb.

^My apology if it sounded like I was suggesting Alan was after something inappropriate. That was not my intention at all nor what I was thinking. I just meant along the lines of what both of you said. I wasn't sure how sneaking around in the dark, maybe getting a glimpse of Kristy would "help" Alan ask her out. Perhaps he felt face to face outside of school might be the best way for him to just ask her but he didn't count on her sitting for multiple kids or something. He figured she'd just be sitting for a 3 year old and he could probably talk to her alone for at least a couple minutes. As for Trevor, since we really never got to know him, I think its safe to say he hoped "practice would make asking." The more times he called, heard Claud's voice, surely, he'd be bound to eventually ask her to the dance. Completely innocent, just as you said Oldhickory, not the brightest of moves!

I had to laugh at Claudia's daydream... It's so detailed!

Kylie - I used to make up detailed daydreams like that. Who knows....maybe I even got it from Claudia!

I used to like to watch "WKRP in Cincinnati" reruns on the mornings I stayed home sick from school ;D

After all, Alan's 12. It made sense in his head, somehow, to spy on Kristy that way.

If the dance was at 4, then everyone would have been able to do trick-or-treat, or have a party, or whatever middle schoolers of the 80s did on Halloween.
