^I think my Grandma probably had Type 2. She had it my whole life. She lived to be in her 70s though.

I’ve only just started to realise how much I enjoy the earliest books. They may not be as ‘dramatic’ as the later ones, but they’re much quirkier and more subtly humorous.
The Babysitters Agency stuff was great – the BSC is apparently such a potential goldmine in Stoneybrook that it seems weird that no other ‘rival’ clubs were set up during the run of the series (unless you count the WLKC). It was very realistic that the Agency were more concerned with recruiting as many sitters as possible and making fast cash without giving much thought to the actual quality of their service – most kids that age wouldn’t be anywhere near as dedicated as the BSC are, and I’m glad this book acknowledged that. I loved the bit where Stacey explained how the club worked to a random eighth-grader, and she just said it sounded like too much work’ and walked off.
Mrs Newton wins points for refusing to hire a twelve-year-old to look after her newborn child alone (did the parents of Stoneybrook have a collective lobotomy later in the series?). I know that age isn’t everything, but twelve-year-olds are basically still children themselves, and I thought it was good that she mentioned that she’d found one 17-year-old sitter through the agency whom she liked. The Jamie stuff was just weird, though – he had a new sister, his parents probably couldn’t give him as much attention anymore, and yet the big trauma in his life was that he didn’t like his new babysitters? Mrs Newton should probably have had alarm bells ringing about the fact that his primary attachment is to the BSC rather than to his parents.

I just re-read this one and LOVED it. I haven't read it in ages, cause I thought there was a lot more diabetes junk in it and I'm glad there wasn't. I get bored hearing about Stacey's illness all the time. I loved the whole Babysitters Agency thing and loved how Stacey and Kristy were the most enthusiastic about doing whatever they had to do to save the BSC where Claud and MA were like umm...what. lol. I thought it was cute how Stacey realized she was kinda desperate to keep her friends and couldn't lose the BSC.
Okay the cigarette burn on the Newtons couch...wth?! A random babysitter just decides to smoke in their house? And no one notices the smell? Mrs. Newton didn't notice that as soon as she got home? And seriously those girls letting a THREE YEAR OLD play outside by himself o.O Geeeez.
And of course, in the end Mrs Newton calls allllllllll the clients of the BSC and informs them of how wonderful the BSC is and how awful the Agency is. Okaaay.

^ I never thought about the burn on the Newtons' couch but that is awful. If someone smoked in my house, I would definitely notice it. Of course, cigarette smoke is one of my allergies so that might make me especially sensitive. Those other girls were awful. Who were they (high schoolers, right?)? I can't remember anymore. I actually enjoy reading about Stacey's illness, but that's probably because my aunt has diabetes so I can "relate". I had forgotten that Stacey was more enthusiastic than MA and Claud about saving the club. That is nice in comparison to the later "I'm too cool for them" version of Stacey. I'll have to reread this one as I really like it, too.

Ooh and this is where they start using kid kits I love when Kristy has that idea, tho it would be interesting if they fleshed it out a bit more, like how the idea came to her and stuff. i wonder how ann came up with the idea, cause it really is a good one. and also how HUGE must those boxes be?! i mean stacey's is full of games, books etc... board games!! i mean come on. i always pictured a shoe box but it must be like a moving box which honestly, how are they transporting those all over town when half the time they are on their bikes?

I always pictured a bigger box - like a Shell oil box (which is probably the size of a moving box) because my grandpa used to get me those and I used them to make my barbie "houses" ;D That would make less sense to cart around than a shoebox but I never thought of it being anything else. Really, I guess the whole "kid kit" thing doesn't make much sense when you think about it and probably wouldn't really work but it is fun to read about. I think I just imagine the kits "magically" appearing at the houses because I never think of how the girls got them there.

I always pictured shoe boxes as well, but yeah they must have been bigger if they were carrying board games in them. In the TV show aren't they like really large shoulder bags? In the movie Stacey brings hers to sit for Rosie and it's a large box. I loved reading about the Kid Kits...I made my own when I was little. I didn't babysit but I just liked having it to put my favorite toys and stuff in

I love reading about the kid kits too. I think they're a really cool idea and I bet kids would actually really enjoy them.

I always saw the Kid Kits as shoebox sized, but even as a kid, I knew they had to be bigger if they carried all the stuff they fit in there.

Me too, starrynight. I even made one of my own at one point, but I think I just used a bag.

^ I pictured them as a medium sizeed box. My step mum and step brother both have type 1 diabetes, and have since very young childhood. My step bro now has a pump though, that is constatly attached to him (its smallish), so he doesn't have to inject himself, the pump measures his blood sugar and makes sure the right amoutn of insulin is flowing into his body. He has to adjust the settings after each meal though. It cost $9 K. But it works for him.

I love reading about the kid kits too. I think they're a really cool idea and I bet kids would actually really enjoy them. I'd always worry they'd be an anti-climax... you'd be all excited about getting together this kid-kit thing and the kid would be really disinterested
