Honestly I think they were really mean about Jenny. Yes, she could be kind of over the top about keeping her clothes nice, but I'm sure she didn't come up with that all on her own. I imagine that if she went home filthy, she'd hear about it from her mother for the rest of the day at minimum. I think sitting for Jenny (and Andrea) would be kind of a nice change from the total chaos at some of the other houses. Let them hang out in their pretty clothes and have a tea party with their stuffed animals if that's what they want. There's no law that every kid has to like getting dirty. Some kids just really don't like messy art projects. I also think they were mean about it. I can see some eye rolling, but they act like she's a monster, when the main problems was her clothes. She wasn't all that different from a normal 4 year old who wants to get their way. I can see how it's annoying, but they kind of singled her out. Karen throws fits when people don't want to play the games she wants to play, but they still like her.

Exactly, u4me. The BSC also seem to fall all over Karen, thinking anything she does or says is okay even if someone is possibly being scared or not being very nice to (Jenny).

That bugged me, especially when Karen wasn't being any more clever/interesting than any of their other charges. Just always "Karen is sooo creative" or "see how precocious she is?" or "I love the way her mind works!" Blegh. It only made me like the "less loved" children like Jenny more. And I am a Karen/LS fan...it was just over the top.

I honestly never thought as much about Jenny until this discussion. I will say, no secret, that I'm not a Karen fan. She could be more entertaining than say the Kormans but in general "enough already" with her. The one time I truly did like her very much was when she got teary eyed and asked if her mom would be okay following Lisa's breaking her ankle. In that scene, she also seemed protective, caring toward Andrew who was upset at all the divorce talk. In general, to quote you again, BooBoo, Karen herself is "over the top." Even Myriah Perkins was more "real" and down to earth than Karen. ETA in March, 2014: With a big that all of you know I have become a Karen and truly bigger Andrew fan. Karen's character in a lot of the BSC books I think was written OOC sort of like everyone was on "MA and Camp BSC." In the LS stories, I got to know Karen, a genuine little girl who yes sometimes did speak before thinking but she meant well and often was quite caring--particularly to her brother.

Like Charlotte, for example. I would have loved to sit for her!

i don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but i just started rereading, and on page 2 claudia says she likes to dance. it's too bad they didn't bring this up again. but i could see claudia showing jessi up (kind of like in black swan, if anyone has seen it) and jessi getting jealous.

^ I remember that. I like how she states all the ways she's the opposite of her family. Likes loud clothes, is wild where they're conservative. She also says she can be a real pain sometimes. I used to want a snake bracelet like she wore to art class.

In rereading the book and this thread, I can relate to Jenny (which I find terrifying!). I was on only child and only grandchild in my family and my father and grandfather died very young so there was only women. Apparently my mom and grandmothers decided I would look amazing in these stupid lacy dresses and shoes and *gasp* bonnets! Ugh, when I think about the outfits they dressed me up it makes me cringe! When I asked my mom about it later in life, she told me that they just wanted me to be as pretty to everyone else as they saw me (gag!). Maybe that is what Mrs. P was doing....however, I did have play clothes!
Also, I think this is the only BSC book that ever mentioned any kind of religious ceremony other than a wedding - am I right with that? It seemed a little odd to me that none of the girls really had any religious affiliations because stoneybrook did seem to be very old fashioned. I know later Abby came along and she was Jewish, but before that I just can't remember religion mentioned at all.
oh and btw - claudia really is a mega b*tch in this one!

Claudia's cousin, Lynn, was christened at the First Congregational Church in Stoneybrook.

I think Mimi's funeral took place in a church, and calling the minister when she died was mentioned....I think.

If Little Sister books count there's one where they put on a Nativity play at Christmas. Mary Anne tells the racist family in Keep Out, Claudia that she's a Methodist. The Pike kids are heavily involved in their church's Nativity play in one of the super mysteries. Mary Anne mentions in #4 that she and her father say grace at meals and she also prays at night. I can't think of any more right now though. I know we've talked on this board before about there not being much religion shown.

I was just thinking of the scene where Mary Anne says maybe they should just let Jenny get dirty. Someone else pipes up with, "if that happens, Mrs. P might tell Mrs. Pike, and Mrs. Pike might--" then she was cut off and never finished that thought. Mrs. Pike might do what? Why would Mrs. Pike even care about someone else's kid's clothing getting dirty? She's got eight kids of her own to worry about; I doubt she'd give a hoot about Jenny's wardrobe.
Were Mrs. Pike and Mrs. Prezzioso supposed to be friends with each other? I never got that impression. I know Jenny randomly appeared at the Pike house in #5 during that picnic, but I never thought the moms were friends.

^Kristy said that. Lol, I don't think Dee would spend two seconds worrying over Jenny's clothes. It would have been interesting on the very off chance had Mrs. Prezzioso complained to her to have heard their conversation. I don't think they were friends either. I am currently reading "Kristy's Mystery Admirer." Kristy says (for the second time. She said this in some other book I think) that Mrs. P finally bought Jenny some pants. Until now, it had been difficult to distinguish Jenny from lace curtains. Boo to Kristy for sure for saying that but it did bring up the ridiculousness again of Mrs. P. I wish Jenny had come home dirty after the play group.
