This is definitely one of those "summery" BSC books for me. It's definitely one that I'd take outside and read in the backyard sunshine. I'd still do the same...if I had a backyard.

Woah, day camps. Ann loves to have group sitting experiences in the early books. And doesn't Mary Anne and Dawn have their own day camp, during a Super Special (Sea City). And there is the day camp in the movie, and probably many more. I guess this was the day camp that started them all?
What's up with Claudia's always uninspiring outfits on the cover. I do like how she is wearing an outfit that is mentioned in the book: black jeans with a big blue t-shirt and a blue scrunchie. She even calls that her "art" look. How is that arty? Maybe because it's not a big deal if she spills something on it, I guess. But you'd think that's Claud's art look would be more, well, arty. And that Claud's outfits on the cover would have been a bit more hip as opposed to side ponytails, vests, black mini skirts, and boots.
Claud's life has a habit of bad things happening right after fights (a la Crazy Peaches).

Also, I was surprised to see how bratty Karen was to Jenny in this book, especially since Karen is portrayed as pretty sympathetic in Little Sister and always trying to make friends with people. Also, Jenny is only four... the same age as Andrew... and I don't really see Karen being so mean to a 4 year old.

Finally, I laughed at the part where Jenny thought Andrew really was a monster, and he scared her into wearing her smock everyday to play camp.

Well, Karen can be rather annoying in the regular BSC books whereas in the LS, she can be a lot more likeable.

I'm reading the "new" version of this book. Remember when Claudia had to call her parents at Chez Maurice? The updated version includes a line about Claudia trying to call their cell phones and not getting through, so she leaves a voicemail and then goes on to call the restaurant.

^Well that's nice that the Kishis are classy enough to turn their cells off in a restaurant.

^ That's cute that they added that in there. I can picture the Kishis like that, too. Thanks for sharing that as I don't have any of the new edition copies.

Finally, I laughed at the part where Jenny thought Andrew really was a monster, and he scared her into wearing her smock everyday to play camp. Yes! I like that part with Andrew too, even though I find it eerie when Jenny whispers “Monster smock” like she was in a horror movie. I felt bad for Mary Anne when Mimi yelled at her in this one. I don’t know why she had to quiz Mimi on her flashcards anyway. They could have just had their special tea.

^ This actually reminds me of when I went out to dinner with my bosses and coworkers last week. Everyone but me were on their cell phones. So I said, "Remember the 90s when people didn't really have cell phones. What would you do at the table then!?" as a joke. I figured I had to go way back to the 90s for people to remember!

Have you seen *Julie and Julia*? That's set in 2002-2003 and there's a scene at lunch where three women are all on their phones!

I was at Denny's today and saw a man on both his laptop and cell phone at the same time. I guess all he needed was earphones to an IPOD or Walkman.
It was nice that the Kishis turned their phones off. However if they brought them so the girls could call in case of an emergency well that didn't do much good!

Also, Jenny is only four... the same age as Andrew... I never thought of that. I mean, I always thought of Jenny as being older, maybe because she talks more. Did anyone else get this impression? I don't know, it's been a while since I read the books, but when I first read about the smock incident, I was slightly confused about why Jenny would be scared of Andrew.

^I'm still a little confused about why Jenny was not only that scared of Andrew but that her fear apparently lasted for a while. I have not read this book in forever either so don't remember specifics but didn't the next day when Andrew was not at the camp, one of the sitters only have to tell Jenny that "Andrew would want her to wear the smock" in order to get her to do so? If I also remember correctly, Jenny's parents were aware of the sudden change in their daughter the first evening--I am probably making this up but think she wore something over her dress even at home. Now, I'm also wondering what exactly Jenny thought Andrew "monster" would do if she didn't wear the smock? Now, I'm getting angry thinking about how awfully poor Jenny was treated, at least the sitters comments about her are over the phone where she can't hear their complaints, this was blatant.
One other point to "answer" your question fluffernutter, I got the impression Jenny led an extremely sheltered life due to her mother. She never went to nursery or preschool. It sounded like (sadly) the only times she played with other kids was when she was being baby-sat for. Maybe she saw Andrew as "worldly"and if he said she better do something, well then she had better. IDK, I should probably re-read this but don't want to because of Mimi!
