I think they were just suppose to realize how expensive everything is, so they would be deterred from wanting to run away (with a friend, etc.), and maybe be more appreciative of how their parents provide them with everything?

I agree that providing the kids with fake incomes would have taught them more. She could have had some of the couples earning less than others, and they all would have had to figure out how they were going to budget their different incomes.

Oh yeah, I'm sure that was the objective - the point of the assignment wasn't to show them how to budget as adults, it was to show them how impossible it would be to support themselves as teenagers if they had a baby.
What was stupid however, was that Mary Anne and Logan did the assignment and were surprised to find that their babysitting money couldn't cover rent, bills, food etc. Um, no sh*t, sherlock.
I think this book was the token anti-teen-pregnancy book and completely unnecessary. The BSC really should've stayed away from the more serious issues.

The BSC really should've stayed away from the more serious issues. I agree. We didn't read them as heavy liteature, just for fun. Besides, like any teen would ever get pregnant in sexless stoneybrook.

I liked reading this book. I do agree that it would have been a lot better if they had different "budgets". I mean, the egg thing is okay...but the money thing is something I think they should have stressed more than the egg thing.
As for the taking it too seriously, I do think they did act a little crazy about it...but maybe they were either focusing on the fantasy of having their own "kids" or wanted to make a good grade on the project. I could understand that....although they shoudln't have been so mean to mal or jessi.
I also liked how Mary Anne and Dawn wanted their parents to have another baby. That was crazy w/ them picking out the baby's room though. I'm glad they got that idea out of their heads lol. BEsides, the idea of Richard and Sharon...um...yeah.....not a good mental image. *shudders* Geni

Maybe child-rearing is very important in that town, seeing how something like the BSC spawned from there.
I remember MA saying that when Sharon cleans, she usually gets tired of it in the middle and wanders off. In the bedroom, she might be the same way. In the middle of it she'll be like "Oh what was that? Oh ok. Thanks dear. That was great."

^ hahaha ;D
I'm surprised MA and Dawn were so, erm, comfortable about the prospect of their parents getting down and dirty. Insulin injections are enough to make one barf, but the notion of your parents making babies is merely exciting?

Ha!
"Do we really have to take them to the doctor? I mean, I'd feel kind of funny taking an egg to a pediatrician."
I agree that it was ridiculous to read the girls in situations where they just had to bring their egg, I'm sorry, their child along. Taking it along baby-sitting, to the movies. puh lease. I also loved how Stacey (or was it Dawn) said to their egg, "Pretend I'm feeding you." This was the easiest assignment for the girls to totally slack off. Any normal eighth grader would have.
And Logan and Mary Anne not being able to afford an apartment on a baby-sitter salary--well duh. But, wasn't the rent for the cheapest apt like 900/month for a one bedroom? I didn't realize Stoneybrook was so expensive to live in. I'm paying 200 less for a nice 2br in a much much larger city in the year 2006.

Yeah, total at that one... Yet another example of how useless the egg-activity was. You really can't take a baby to the movies at all, what with all their fussing, crying etc. Babies are not silent little people who merely sleep quietly while life goes on around them. Generally they like to make their presence known! It would've made more sense if MA and Logan had to hire a "babysitter" who didn't turn up (or something) thus forcing them to miss out on seeing a movie.

My only explanation is that they don't know how babies are made MA: Wouldn't it be dibble if Dad and Sharon had a baby?! D: Yeah! Only, how would they get a baby? MA: Silly Dawn! They write a nice letter to the stork, of course. D: Oh, of course! *enter Richard and Sharon* MA: Look, we helped you draft a letter! I wrote it in my best secretary's handwriting and everything. R&S: What? D: You know, for the stork. *Richard and Sharon run away*

I hated when Mary Anne was baby-sitting for Ricky and Rose and she brought her egg-baby (Sammy) along. She left the *actual* babies crying in their cribs while she ran downstairs, set Sammy safely in her basket, and then ran back upstairs to get one of the twins. All because she didn't think it was safe to leave Sammy laying on the twins' changing table while she brought the twins downstairs. I mean, lets give the situation a little perspective, Mary Anne, and realize that the egg is just an egg.
