How big of a part do you think feeling sorry for EM and wanting to give her a better life/take her out of a bad spot played in their decision-making?

How big of a part do you think feeling sorry for EM and wanting to give her a better life/take her out of a bad spot played in their decision-making? Hmm. This is something to think about. I'd say one of Watson and Elizabeth's reasons for wanting to adopt a child is to give her a better life and home. However, I've always assumed they adopted a child because they were getting too "old" to biologically have a baby.

I always thought it was just what they said, that they already had six kids between them so they decided to give a child that was already alive a home.

^ Greer, I had forgotten that they said they'd adopt a child because they already had six kids between them. Thank you for reminding me.

Oh okay. Thanks. I think I remember now. It's been a long time since I read it.

I wanted to read this one in preparation for Mother's Day. The idea of a day trip to parking lot carnival sounds lame to me in comparison to the other BSC adventures, but I overlooked that this time and tried to concentrate on the book for what it was an enjoyed it. Although it bothers me how Ann explicitly says that the carnival takes place in a parking lot beside Carle Playground and yet on the cover it looks different. I also had parking lot carnivals show up in the city I grew up in and they were nothing like the one in the book. That must have been one huge parking lot to hold all the attractions!
Another thing that bothered me was how Ann mentions Boo-Boo caught a mole in his mouth and brought it inside when they were finishing up dinner. The mole wasn't dead. Kristy even goes into more detail about it (later) as she falls asleep. I thought it was just totally unnecessary and Ann spent way too much time describing something unimportant. I know she didn't want the mole to be dead as she's an animal lover and it might bother the readers but she should have left it out entirely.

The way they describe the carnival area. Like it's huge parking lot. Was it a public parking lot, for everyone to park or private parking lot, but it's huge parking lot. The only carnival we went to. Was downtown Mt. Clemens. They'll block off some streets, for the rides, tents for stuff on sale or food vending tents.
Yeah, the mole thing was useless. Why put that in there? I'm not gross by it. What's the point of saying Boo-Boo caught mole in his mouth, wants to show it to everyone, while their eating dinner.

It was nice seeing Stacey come back for a while . I seem to remember Ann Martin saying she thought taking Stacey out was a huge mistake on her part. I do really like seeing Stacey back in the group.

When Sam told Karen that her epidermis is showing, it reminded me of when in Karen's Ghost, I believe, where he did the same thing but that time, Karen knew what epidermis is. Nice to see some continuity. I would have liked seeing everyone's reaction Boo-Boo bringing in the mole. As for Emily Michelle's adoption… everyone said everything that could be said about it.

The idea of a day trip to parking lot carnival sounds lame to me in comparison to the other BSC adventures I think it sounds realistic in comparison to most of their other adventures! A little local carnival is something that actual teenage baby-sitters might do with their charges.

^Years ago a shady looking little carnival was put up in the grocery store parking lot here for about a week. It had a handful of rides and maybe a food truck. It looked very much how I pictured the BSC trip to be and would definitely be a doable baby-sitting situation.

There's an annual one here which is puzzle-pieced into the little yard of the Catholic church, and I can picture that too.

We have tons of cheap parking lot/church carnivals in my hometown and that's how I picture them. I would never go on the rides but the food is always good.
I never understood why they waited until the day before either. Especially since, doesn't most adoption agencies want to see the family before they pass them through? Especially on international adoptions? Maybe it was just a different time but one of my childhood friends had a sister adopted from China. They all were "interviewed" (my friend was fairly young so she just played while they spoke with her parents and then saw how happy she was growing up in their enviroment) and then when they were going to get the said baby, her parents flew to China to get her, while my friend stayed behind with her grandparents.
The book overall was very cute but a lot of it just didn't make sense. They all knew how Karen gets about certain things and I feel they definitely should've told them all up front. Also, is this yet another Mother's Day that Karen and Andrew spent at the "Big House" instead of at "The Little House" with their own mother? This was before they were doing monthly visits.

That's good question about Karen & Andrew staying at the Big house, around Mother's Day. I think, it's in one of LS books. Not sure, which one. Might be in Stepmother or different LS books. Maybe, someone will know.
This is a book, I want to re-read again, closer to May or closer to Mother's Day.

I have not recently read through this entire thread but it sounds like (right now) I'm the only person who imagines Sudsy's as bigger. I do remember it was set up in the parking lot next to Carle Playground. I never understood that because unless the lot was HUGE or there was ample street parking, where would cars park? I sometimes imagine it at the park inside which would make more sense, sort of like a crafts fair/carnival. I enjoy reading about Sudsy's and how thrilled Jamie is to go, so cute and his songs in this book so funny. I still need to make one of them my signature.
