GOOD GOLLY, does anyone get tired of the sitters constantly saying "I'm not bragging, I'm just being honest" in the books? Rereading the books as an adult, I can't believe how much it comes up. I would understand if it only appeared in a few books, but it appears in a lot of them.
Anyone want to start posting it here when they come across a similar phrase in the books? I'm reading #33 Claudia and the Great Search, and already on page 4 we have:
"I'm not bragging. This is just the way things are."
(In reference to her superior skills in the arts, naturally.)
I seem to remember seeing similar sentiments in a lot of Jessi books. Did you guys know she's danced the lead in several ballets and she's only 11?
Let's see how many examples we can list from the books!

I actually noticed that the other day, I was reading a Claudia book and I noticed she had said that about her art. It made me think that the sitters, say it a lot. I think I remember Karen saying it a few times as well.

I was just thinking about it! It's a very annoying shtick, IMO. I'm too lazy to dig out the book, but one of my favorite variations is from Dawn and the Older Boy, when she yells "I already WAS a beauty," and then thinks to herself it was conceited.

I remember Kristy saying "I'm not bragging, I'm just being honest" in one of her books when she was talking about the club.

I know! The whole "bragging" thing can be a little annoying sometimes. I mean I'd really like to see Claudia's art and Jessi's dancing so I can judge them properly to see if they are as good as they say they are.

I hate the whole bragging thing in general, especially with the whole "genius inside" t-shirts, "I'm awesome" necklace, etc. I also hate how they keep bragging about each other, too. For example, in European Vacation, Mary Anne mentions how witty Claudia is when she responds to Cokie's legendary line, "Is this the Babysitter's Club wet t-shirt contest?" (Something like that) I think that the bragging is what makes people look down on Mallory, such as her lack of being pretty.

I just started Snowbound and in Kristy's letter to the editor of the Stoneybrook News, she says that her friends' stories of what happened to them in the blizzard are fascinating--really, she's not bragging!

I personally think when you have to say you're not bragging, you probably are bragging, justified or not... but that's our loveable babysitters club for you! I wonder what other people really thought of them ... in particular, the "popular, cool" ones like Stacey and Claudia. I haven't read many Abby books but I tend to like them because there is less of the bragging, or it's more like a joke, exaggerated etc.

This is over-used way too much. Its one thing to say it in one book, but in a whole bunch is quite redunant.I find that Claudia and Jessi used it the most. By the Way, kylie I love your new siggy!

^I should keep a tally of how many times they say it, hehe. Lol you should. I can't even count how many times that phrase was brought up in BSC books. It was the one thing that annoyed me about the series.
