^Wow, I'd be surprised if Dee and John were 30 at most, considering Mal is 11!

^Oops you're right about that! I got mixed up with the Jamie's mom, who we were talking about how old she was recently. Sorry. Dee and John (I would hope) were at least mid 30's. As I said in the other thread about Jamie's parents, I never gave much of any thought to the parents (of charges) ages just because it seemed most (of the sitters) were early 40's.
That does make more sense adding even 5 years to Uncle Joe's age.

^ Wow. Mid 30s and having 8 kids. I couldn't imagine!

^ When I read 30, I panicked for minute. I'm 31, and no way would I want that many kids (or any) at my age!

^I'm older than that and agree! I do admit to liking the idea just probably not the reality! Mal did say in "Too Many Babies," that she was going to have 8 children like her mother. Someone said, good thing they (the babies) will be one at a time (unless Mal had triplets) so that after a few Mal could change her mind.

i heard that deafness is really common in those cats. the genes that give them their color often also make them deaf, or something like that.

I had never read this book as a kid, I didn't read hardly any of the mysteries actually, I think just Mary Anne and the Secret in the Attic, Kristy and the Haunted Mansion and Kristy and the Mystery Train.
Honestly I hate this mystery, but I loved the book. I loved the family dynamics in this book. Most of the time the family is like an after thought, when in an 11 year olds life, family is pretty important.
A couple thoughts: -I have not had english muffin pizza, but if you take refrigerator biscuits and make pizza they are really good. -Why didn't Mallory's parents ASK Uncle Joe what he liked to eat? -Why did a 6 year old have a Simpsons sleeping bag? -Anyone else think that Ghost Cat was a girl and now when the Craines finally get around to cleaning out the attic they are going to find a litter of dead cats? Because that is the only reasonable explanation for this story.
I didn't like this mystery because I don't care for open ended endings, I find them unpleasant and unsettling. I really liked reading the non-mystery chapters though, and kind of forgot it was a mystery at all.
Oh and I think Hodges went out of his way to make Mallory look like an ugly man on this cover... I kind of feel sorry for whoever the model for Mallory was. She must have the worst self esteem ever.

^ Unless I'm dreaming, I saw a picture of the original Mallory model somewhere and she's actually cute. Not sure if she was the same person who modeled for this cover, though. Also, you should definitely try English muffin pizza at least once.

^ She was in a photo with Ann that she posted on her Facebook. Now that I think of it, I believe that was a few years ago! Obviously they went through multiple different cover models throughout the series, but I remember she looked like the cover model used to the Mallory on Strike era.

I didn't know this one was such a favorite. It didn't do it for me. I love cats, but that thing on the cover looks like a taxidermy creature. I'd be screamy, too, if I saw that in my attic. I liked the chapter with Dawn and her ghost hunting tools. I got a laugh out of her ectoplasm meter and the "what do you expect for $5.99" comment.
I thought it was a little random that both Kristy and Mr. Pike suddenly decided that the sitters' parents should meet new clients before the first job. Then Mr. Craine tried to strike up a bro-mance with Mr. Pike, lol. Also, they randomly told us that Mrs. Craine was 34 which made me go "eek".
I hate Alzheimer's stories. There is nothing entertaining about them to me, so I didn't care for the Uncle Joe story line at all.

Haha, Dawn's ghost busting equipment reminds me of our collection of ectoplasm backpacks, etc. that were tie-ins to one of the ghostbusters movies.
Uncle Joe's subplot is too sad.

Should Alzheimer's be "entertaining"?

Entertaining, interesting, romantic (someone way up thread mentioned The Notebook), etc. Yeah, I think if it was in a children's book then it was supposed to be entertaining. I'm sure some people feel the same way about reading cancer stories.
