I agree about Mel Tucker, he might be a creepy adult someday. One thing I liked about re reading this mystery was I didn't remember originally Mel was Mr. X so it added an extra scary element to it! Same here!

^ I would assume he sneaked out and they had no idea he was gone. Not sure, though.

I loved this book!! It remind me of my old babysitting days, in H.S. (minus the letters' of course). Like the others here, the book kinda creeped me out, and I too, a grown woman. I will re-read this book soon! This was def. one of my favorite mysteries.

Remember how the Pike kids saw one of the letters he left and it had a cutout of any eyeball glued on it? It said that they'd better keep an eye on their hamster, so they freaked out and put Frodo in a shoebox in the closet.

I know! The closet wasn't the first place they stuck him, either. They kept moving the box around - at one point they put it in the OVEN, then decided that wasn't the safest place, so they settled on the closet shelf.

^ Ew - baked Hamster (sorry - I couldn't resist ;D) Agree. Poor Frodo. This makes me think of a horse show where we got these ugly little wooden boxes for awards and everyone started calling them Hamster Caskets (that's exactly what they looked like ;D) ;D I always found this scene kind of funny but am obviously glad Frodo didn't get cooked (or hurt by the psycho kid)

A wooden box? Haha, what were you supposed to do with that? why didn't they just give you ribbons?

They did give ribbons for the placings but this was the "trophy" for 1st (it was a big regional show). I was actually thankful that I only got stuck with one. ;D I preferred shows where we got "useful" prizes (or certificates redeemable as gift certificates or money ;D) Mel was seriously disturbed to consider threatening a hamster....

yeah i thought the 'don't tell mom and dad' thing was kinda annoying as well.
a friend of mine, he was telling me how Oprah did a special on trying to destroy childrens literature and picked on the BSC. OK OK she wasn't really 'setting out to destroy' but his point was they were taking a good thing and trying to find a fault with it.
i'd have to agree, though i don't remember this being an issue, simply cuz 1. Oprah doesn't and never will, interest me. 2. at the time i was too young to give a d**n.
i can see how *maybe* a group of kids might immatate the BSC by being self reliant like the girls in the books, but come on, i think, a kid who reads book after book after book of any sort of literature ON THEIR OWN FREE WILL, might i add, has got to be made of stronger stuff and have a head on their shoulder to be a bit above the influence.
