I wonder why they changed the title of this book from "Dawn and the Mysterious Mr. X" to "Beware Dawn".

I wonder whose idea the contest was.

This mystery is decent; probably better when you're reading it for the first time and don't know the ending. The issue I have with this mystery is, by this time, this is the 4th time the BSC have been receiving mysterious notes which end up being Alan, Cokie or someone similar (Phantom Phone Calls, Bad Luck Mystery, Mystery Admirer) so you know it's going to be someone who is connected to the BSC somehow.

Not one of my favourites. I've just reread it and the ending was predictable and cheesy.

This was an okay read. The "mystery" was too reminiscent of Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls--which this book even mentions! And Dawn really has no personality in it, you could've swapped her out with any of the girls and the plot would be the same. We also didn't learn anything new or different about Dawn. The sitting chapters were the most entertaining. I also completely forgot who Mel Tucker was, I had to go back to the beginning to even realize who it was, lol. I thought the sitters were a little too easy on the kid, he may be troubled but what he did was wrong. I'm not saying he shouldn't get help but there were almost no consequences to his actions. And it bothered me when Claudia told Charlotte not to tell her parents about the prank, very irresponsible--just like the sitters not telling the parents about the threatening notes. That's a big deal.

Agreed! You never tell a kid to keep a secret from their parents. A lot of parents teach their kids that if someone says this to you, you tell your parents right away. It's irresponsible, but also makes me trust you less.

I'm rereading this again and Dawn was explaining about the Phantom Caller who was Alan Gray because he'd been too shy to ask out Kristy.
Ellen Miles needed to brush up on her BSC history. Alan Gray wasn't the one who was doing the calling it was Trevor Sandborne who had wanted to ask out Claudia but was too shy. Alan was the one who's stolen their record book. And Alan was in no way shy by any means.
Once again they don't tell their parents about getting threatening letters.

Dawn and the Phantom Phone calls. That is an ugly living room. She looks kinda sexy here. I think it's the windblown hair.

I see this is one of the more popular mysteries, and I can see why. It's a fun book and not too unbelievable or serious like the later mysteries. The Sitter of the Month contest was a fun idea that I'm surprised took this long to happen (I hate echoing the opinions of so many others, but yes, I thought the 7 way tie was cheesy. Also just don't buy it. There's also a point where Charlotte tells Claudia she might vote for her, but we all know Stacey is her favorite. I guess all the kids voted for all 7 of them. Still cheesy).
I actually like that Dawn suspected Kristy briefly. It felt more believable than Claudia searching Stacey's room in the last mystery. Plus, Dawn and Kristy aren't nearly as close.
Does Mel Tucker appear later in the series? I'm glad it ended with his parents saying he'll see a psychiatrist. I feel like if I was in Dawn's place, I'd be much madder, though. He did in fact trepass. I don't blame her for freaking out about sounds coming from the passage while all this was going on (and before she suspected Mel) *shudders* Also, these girls are beyond crazy for not telling their parents.
I love the Jessi chapter. Very funny. I was curious to see if "Snake Boy Loose in San Francisco" exists, but didn't come up with anything on Google.

I thought the 7 way tie was cheesy. Also just don't buy it. I agree. No way would the votes fall exactly into 7 when an entire school is voting. We're supposed to believe that the new sitters got the same amount of votes as someone like Kristy, who's been sitting for these kids for years? Any one person could have changed their vote and made a clear-cut winner but no, the astronomical odds of a 7-way tie just happened to work out. It's horse hockey. The only thing I believe about this contest is that a 7-way tie proved the contest was stupid and that's why we never saw it again.

The Australian "slang" words bonzer shelia is actually offensive to us Australian females. Nobody in Australia and I don't know anybody who would call a female in Australia a "bonzer shelia." And the movie Crocodile Dundee is a terrible movie and not a great representation of Australia. Ann M Martin when she created the Hobarts had no clue about my country.
