The last time I read this one, what struck me the most was how absolutely ridiculous Jessi was to be so convinced Daniel was in love with her, based on pretty much nothing, and how she was worried about letting him down gently. I do think he was leading her on a bit, though, by never mentioning that he had a girlfriend.

After re-reading this book, it struck me that Ann is quite good at making the trip seem as realistic as possible, yet, at the same time, the books - especially Super Specials - kind of become somewhat lackluster. Does that make sense to anyone? I don't disagree that the books are good, and I enjoy them as much as anyone, but basically this book was about a mystery that was barely touched on, kids making a secret house in the woods, the excitement over a boat float, the excitement over a lame lodge dance, and... that's about it. Granted, these things actually do happen on summer vacations, but sometimes this book read like a wet noodle I say that with love, haha.

^ I don't know...I always liked this one when I was younger. I think it was the Stacey/Sam storyline that really sold me. It seemed SOOOO romantic to little me. Plus, I liked the island campout. That's totally the kind of thing I'd be into, even now.

I don't think anyone has commented on these parts, so here's my say: I really like the part when the BSC goes to eat dinner at the lodge by themselves (Kristy says she has to convince her Mom to let them skip the family BBQ at the cabin). They're really excited about eating by themselves, but trying not to look too excited, so they don't look immature. Makes them seem like real 13-year-olds.
I also don't think it's too weird that the cabin had two rooms with 12 beds in each - the cabin must have been used as a summer camp before or something. Although it would have made a lot more sense if they had mentioned this somewhere in the book.
I really like this book, I think this one and #2 are tied as my favorite Super Specials. I think the writing is good and the characters are almost all in character (except for Dawn, who for some reason has now become terrified of ghosts).

^ I've always liked this one, too. You're not the only one. I would have loved going to the lodge with my friends when I was 13, but now...I think I'd prefer the BBQ.

^I liked the girls' night out at the lodge, too. I thought I had the memory though (different book)? of Kristy's family having a bbq that Kristy and Co declined attending because of Dawn. The difference was (in my possible memory) Kristy wanted to enjoy whatever was being cooked but opted out for Dawn. In this book, she just says the bbq sounded fun but eating dinner without parents at the lodge had more of a draw. Now, I'll be the first to understand how eating at someone's house (in this book as their cabin guest) can be awkward due to my food preferences and now TMJ needs. However, no one thought Dawn could have made herself something or gone to the lodge market and or gotten takeout, that just bugged me probably because if it hadn't been for Dawn's "problem," we might have gotten to read more about Kristy's family interacting as a group. One Dawn not about food or Nessie but Emily. Page 136. "Emily could be so frustrating. She repeated all the other words properly. And anyway, she had said, 'boat, just fine back at our cabin. Why wouldn't she say it now?" This time around, this just struck me as rude on Dawn's part. Maybe she needed, as was proven at the end by Emily, to listen! Dawn could have asked Emily where the boot was or to show it to her instead of getting all worked up. Small thing but didn't sit right. This is still one of my favorite super specials. I love that it is a story that could have happened in real life. It would have been cool if Aunt Faith and Uncle Pierson had made an appearance or even call. I would have enjoyed getting to "know" them.

^ I don't mind Dawn's attitude toward Emily in that scene, now that I think about it. Real 13 year old probably would get frustrated about something like that rather than being endlessly patient and kind and parent-like.

^That is true and I agree. It just came across to me as though Dawn was getting frustrated with Emily and that would not have been okay. IDK, probably just how I "read" it.

Hahaha I love how Claudia writes about the boat show and calls it the boat shoe! This girl needs a dictionary. I still like this one but dawn really annoyed me with her lock ness monster screaming fits every time she was near the water...get a grip.

^ I don't think a dictionary would help her much since she doesn't know how to spell the words to begin with.

So true! I didn't even think about you needing to actually know at least a little bit about the word to find it in the dictionary ... Farroh

Maybe they changed it because the mystery of Shadow Lake was really only talked about in the Dawn chapters.
