^It is worse than going to the doctor because it's painful. I've had most of my back teeth pulled and it never gets any easier each time I go back.

I had a lot of work done on my teeth as well, braces, all my wisdom teeth pulled, bonded, etc. So maybe that contributes to my fear and hatred of the dentist.

I read Claudia’s Book and found the chapter with her visit to the dentist to have her tooth pulled really interesting with all of the parallels to this book. The two were very close, even down to the details like the rocket ship chair and the prizes in the helmet. In some ways, I liked the inconsistency but in other ways, it was really strange, like it was almost the same story with the same details. I hadn’t ever picked up on this before, probably because this is only the second tiem I’ve read Claud’s Portrait and since I’ve read Karen’s Toothache so much lately. ;D

How old was she in that chapter because if she was Karen's age then it really would be the same story, just with a different person.

^ I think she was Karen's age - maybe a year or two younger but about 5 or 6 - which is what made it seem so close. It was almost like the same story.

I was terrified of the dentist too at her age so I know what she was going through. It was sad reading about her will.
I loved reading about baking the maple leaf cookies in class and the description of the dental specialist's office though.

And Claudia was also 7 when it was pulled, she was in second grade
By the way, did anyone feel like the part where Karen is writing her will was too much?

Why doesn't watson just tell karen's mom when karen says her tooth hurts? Watson gives all responsibility for getting a dentist appointment on karen by telling her to tell her mommy the tooth hurts so mommy can make an appointment. Maybe due to their custody agreement Watson couldn't make a dentist appointment himself but he should have mentioned the toothache to Lisa when she came to pick the kids up. Instead Lisa doesn't find out until Karen is in so much pain at school that the nurse calls her because Karen at 7 is not going to mention a toothache to mommy when she is afraid of the dentist

This is one of my favourite Little Sister books! I LOVE the part where Karen think she is a fortune-teller or psychic. I am really into astrology, spirituality, clairvoyance, etc. I believe that Karen COULD have these abilities -- kids tend to be more sensitive to this stuff but adults tend to snuff their light by telling them that it is not possible.

A lot of things she said would happen really did happen, but it is true that if you try too hard, it doesn't always work, and she got way over in her head when it was "revealed" to her that Ms. Colman was having a baby, and when she started getting bad thoughts about the oral surgery really doing her in.

But Ms. Colman actually does get pregnant and has a baby (in a few books after this one) so technically Karen WAS correct

Was it really a few books after? How few? I stopped buying them after Karen's Baby Sitter although a few years later, my sister bought some of the books that were being issued that time.
I guess Karen IS a psychic....remember in "karen's salad garden" (LMAO) she predicted having a vegetable sale too? I think Tia was amused and Granny was just letting the poor girl have her fun....
