I just finished reading this book. Karen is a complete brat. She is staying at the "big house" for a month (for the first time) and Elizabeth asks her to do some (simple) chores, which Karen keeps forgetting to do. Elizabeth takes away her allowance then and that makes Karen furious. She flat out tells Watson that she does not want to spend Mother's Day with him and Elizabeth and even gives her a bouquet of dead flowers for the holiday!

The only thing I thought was really stupid about Karen in this book was that most of the chores she had to do (make bed, keep room tidy) were things she did without question when she was only at the house for weekends and yet she suddenly forgot to do them every single day.
Watson made me grumpy in this one. Karen and Andrew should have been able to spend actual Mother's Day with their mother even if it was "Big House" month. I thought Watson often pushed way too hard to have Karen and Andrew do special things for Elizabeth. He was probably pissy that they were so close to Seth, but they lived full time with Seth for so long that he really was Daddy #2 to them while Elizabeth was still kinda "Daddy's wife" instead of Mommy #2.

As someone with a stepmother myself, I think it's absolutely inappropriate for watson to try to make karen celebrate mother's day with elizabeth. Wtf watson.

^ So glad to have some agreement on this. The first time I read this book, I admit that I thought Karen was a brat. But (once again ;D) my mom pointed out that maybe I needed to look at things from her perspective. I did when I reread and though I do still feel bad for Elizabeth (she does really try, I think), I feel even worse for Karen. Usually I like Watson but think he was very wrong in this one. Unfortunately, this kind of thing commonly happens in stepfamilies, I think. I just feel bad for everyone involved (except Watson), especially Karen, Andrew and Lisa. Glad that I'm not the only one defending Karen on this. ;D

It makes complete sense about Karen wanting to spend Mother's Day with Lisa. In Kristy and Mr. Mom she wants to spend more time with Watson after his heart attack and Lisa won't let her. I never understood that. I know they want to stick to their arrangement as best as possible, but I think in certain circumstances ( Mother's Day, Father's Day, family emergencies) they should be able to visit with the parent who doesn't have them for the month.
I still think it was mean of Karen to give Elizabeth dead flowers for Mothers Day, even though I laughed when I read that part. ;D I'm glad she eventually did give Elizabeth the real present and they managed to work some things out.

Karen was a real brat in this one, but I agree that Lisa and Watson's inability to be the tiniest bit flexible with the arrangements is really annoying. Although I could understand not wanting to leave Karen with Watson after he'd just had a heart attack She seems kind of exhausting even on a good day.

Watson probably should've let Karen spend mother's day with her mom. cos then Lisa might return the favor in June, when it's father's day.

^Karen mentioned that Father's Day would be a little house month and Watson said something like "Don't worry, we'll work it out." Mm hmm, I bet he'd be at the little house Father's Day morning to snatch the kids for the day. Jerk. I do think he was a pretty awesome step-father but part of that was because he didn't have Elizabeth's ex to compete with.

^ I'll bet Lisa just let Karen go to the big house for Father's Day. But maybe not since she didn't let Karen go there in Mr. Mom. That might have been because she didn't want to add to the family's burdens, though, with caring for an extra kid. Interesting that I just read Karen's Fishing Trip where she goes on vacation over Father's Day with the big house family. Wonder if that is the same "year", though....

I always assumed that they didn't want to make poor Nannie take care of Karen and Andrew on top of Emily Michelle AND Watson, and that's why Lisa only brought them over for a short visit. Especially since Karen would have been all over Watson trying to "help" him - she always meant well, but I can see her being realllly annoying if you're sick and just want some peace.

If they live in the same town, there should absolutely be no problem with the kids spending time with both parents however they want, especially since it appears that the divorce was amicable.

^ You're right. So amicable, in fact, that I'm not quite sure why it had to happen. Seth or Elizabeth maybe.....;D

I feel bad for both Karen and Elizabeth in this one. I felt Elizabeth really did try in this one, however I thought Karen should have been allowed to see her own mother on mothers day, it is just one day after all.

I agree, I mean what's so hard about letting Karen and Andrew go visit Lisa for Mother's Day? They could've spent the day with her and then at night, she could've taken them back to Watson's and they could've spent the rest of the night celebrating Mother's Day with Elizabeth. Haha, I forgot about Karen giving Elizabeth dead flowers until just now. I remember laughing at that part while reading this book lol.

honestly, i don't think it's necessary for karen to celebrate mother's day with elizabeth at all. maybe give her a present or something, but there's no need for karen to celebrate with elizabeth in lieu of her real mother. elizabeth has five other kids to celebrate with, can't she let karen and andrew spend the day with lisa?
