^ Thanks for the birthday wishes! It was a much better day than Karen's because my parents were together ;D (though we are actually always together so this was no novel thing. Still, it was nice and I kept thinking about poor Karen)

I liked this book, yet it was so sad. I felt so bad for Karen and like all of you, I hate that Watson and Lisa couldn't put aside their feelings for just a couple of hours so Karen could be happy. I mean really, what is so hard about that? And did anyone else cry at the beginning of the book when no one remembered to pick Karen up from school? The illustration of that was so sad. I remember it perfectly: Karen has her head down and is probably crying while Ms. Colman has her hand on her shoulder. However, I did like the two birthday parties that Karen had; her fancy one with her little-house family and her circus party with her friends and her big-house family and I liked the cat cupcakes that Lisa made for Karen's birthday party at school. I also laughed when Karen snuck a peek at her presents and then wrapped them back up so nobody would know she looked at them lol.

Hehee, I always wanted to do that with my bday and xmas presents after reading that. But I was scared and never did...I figured I wouldn't be able to re-wrap the gifts well enough! I sucked (still do) at gift-wrapping

^ ;D I am an "anti snooper". One time, my grandma had my Christmas presents sitting out in plain sight and it really devestated me. Even now, I love being surprised. My mom, though, is such a huge snooper that the year she and my dad got married, he put her presents in a wooden box and nailed it shut. Then he took the funniest picture of her sitting on the box scowling ;D I can totally see Karen doing that.

My mom totally did the unwrapping and rewrapping thing when she was a kid. I still love surprises, personally, although I snooped around a lot as a kid.

But...they didn't yell at her They just "looked cross" according to Karen. What I didn't like was Lisa saying the "Excuse me, I'm raising a brat??" line aloud, while Karen was still in the room. Awkward for Karen Kristy told her that asking for that many presents was "tacky," which made me laugh. I think she just didn't know how sensitive and mixed-up Karen was feeling about the subject, which was preventing her from confiding in Kristy. Hahahaha. I know. Like all the great toys Karen has at the big house just appeared there without any help from Watson.

^ I interpret Kristy as not giving Karen a chance as she often doesn't because I sense some jealousy on her part (that Karen has a dad and she doesn't) but can see how you would have a different view. Hopefully Karen saw it like you do. I'm sensitive to this kind of thing because I've had bad experiences of going to the one person who I "know will understand" and having them not even want to listen or support me. Anyway, I really liked how they had potato chips for "hor's derv's" (major Claud spelling there but can't even get close enough for spell check - blame it on my fever ;D) at the "fancy" party. I thought that whole thing was cute. ;D

^lol that reminds me of thanksgiving. we went to my mom's college advisor's house, and he's only recently started eating junk food (he's in his 70s). he fell in love with doritos and brought some out as hors d'ouerves (can't spell it either . i was thrilled.

Kristy "not giving Karen a chance" doesn't make sense to me, as she does seem to listen to Karen's problems a lot of the time. But that's your opinion. Haha, I'm reminded of when Karen called up Kristy at a BSC meeting to tell her that Andrew stole her kazoo or something and wouldn't give it back, and Kristy stayed on the phone with her for awhile. She didn't cut the conversation short for club business, and after she hung up told the others that she tries to be sensitive to her and Andrew's needs, because they're much younger and have been through a lot. From what I've read I don't see Kristy as being jealous of Karen. I think it might seem that way before she first meets/baby-sits them (telling Watson "I'm sorry you're such a terrible father!") but she was only feeling sorry for herself in that instance. Kristy really enjoys Karen's company, and respects her. I think because in LS we're seeing things from entirely Karen's POV, it's inevitable that Kristy will come across sometimes as one of the "adults"--sometimes short with Karen and not entirely understanding of her dilemmas. Oh and I totally loved the fancy party

^ Agree, greer. That's what I see too. I used to really like Kristy before I read the LS books but I don't know, she just rubs me the wrong way in a lot of those. Not even sure why. Maybe because I like and can relate to Karen so much. ;D I agree, booboo, that there are situations when Kristy is definitely patient, understanding and a great big sister. There are probably more of those times. I also thought the circus party sounded fun and was glad that Scott agreed to "marry" Hannie. ;D

I noticed that too. To be honest, as a kid of divorce, I can't understand why Karen would want her parents in the same room for her party. At my 21st last year, both my parents and their partners came, and it was all I was worrying about leading up to it! I would have been happy with the two parties, and my parents not verbally bashing each other in front of me
