This is a book I love reading around the holidays...I like how excited Karen is before the trip and how she says it'll still be dark when they leave, that's how early they're taking off. I thought that kind of thing was fun as a kid too. (Now though...no thanks, I am not a morning person ) Something I always found interesting...Karen seems to always pack for herself. Like when she's going to visit her grandparents, she's packing her own suitcase. My mom never let me pack my own stuff at seven. I was glad to see Karen in a giving mood later and feeling very lucky that she got presents at Christmas when she and Maxie take part in the toy drive and see that not every kid is like them. I hope that Santa guy that took her money was legit! Oh, and the Three Musketeers holiday party at the end sounded really nice.

I really like this book as well, I always liked the part where she donated the rest of the money for the needy kids at the end. I liked seeing how generous she was.

Christmastime is my favorite time to live in NYC. I don't really get the full effect any more, since the most impressive city decor is a ways uptown, but when I was a teenager I took the Fifth Avenue bus home after school and I would get to see the Christmas tree, the giant snowflake (I always thought of Karen saying "It's bigger than Seth!" whenever I passed that), all the window displays...great memories. One of these days I should just get on the bus for the fun of watching the scenery. So, yeah, this was one of my favorite books in the LS series.

I always wanted to see NYC at Christmastime, I think that is another reason I like this book so much. I hope to someday see the decorations in the city.

^ Me too. Everytime I've been to New York it's been during the summer.

Has anyone seen the Osbourne Spectacle of Lights at Disney World? My cousin is going to see it tomorrow and that's what I think of every time I read this book. Probably because that's the closest I'll be to NYC at Christmas. ;D

I just read this one and really enjoyed it, especially the description of NYC. It was my holiday trip. ;D I thought it was sweet how Karen donated her money, too, and enjoyed reading about Maxie again. I think this is one of my favorite LS Christmas books I've read so far (haven't finished all of them yet, though).

I found this book at the Goodwill with a bunch of others...it's still a favorite of mine!
Although I found Nancy and Hannie's reaction to Karen's gift to them kind of unrealistic. I don't know that seven-year-olds would be able to really appreciate that - I know kids can be very giving, but it's kind of different for someone to say "I gave your present to someone else," IMO.
(And boy do I sympathize with Karen...everything here IS expensive, and it does make Christmas shopping difficult sometimes...gotta love internet shopping!)

I don't know that seven-year-olds would be able to really appreciate that - I know kids can be very giving, but it's kind of different for someone to say "I gave your present to someone else," IMO. I just read this for the first time last night and I agree that Nancy and Hannie's reaction to Karen's gift to them was unrealistic. I really can't see seven year olds understanding something like giving your money to the needy, especially money that was supposed to be used to buy them presents. When I was their age, presents was the only thing I had my mind on at Christmas, so seeing Nancy and Hannie being so happy that Karen gave her present money away was very unrealistic. I did like that Karen gave it to the needy, though. That was very touching. That and when Karen and Maxie went to the toy drive . I liked reading about all the decorations Karen saw in NYC. I always wanted to go there at Christmas, because I'm sure it's very beautiful. I live close to Chicago so hearing about NYC's Christmas decorations made me think of how Chicago is decorated for Christmas. We have a big Christmas tree too and of course Marshall Field's has the Christmas windows (well, now it's a Macy's but it'll always be Fields to me ;D). We used to have an FAO Schwartz, but then they closed it, so sad .

This book was fun to read. I forgot that Karen got in trouble in this one. I am going to have to take a trip to the goodwill store myself to find this one.

I love the part where they go to Rumpelmayer's (which closed just a few years after this book was published, I think) and Karen and Andrew order sundaes and Lisa and Seth have cappuccino. That always makes me crave sweets!

^Me too! I always get hungry and crave a sundae when I read that part. Which is funny because I generally don't get a sweet tooth.
