They are basically conjoined twins in the Little Sister books. In the one I just read they were both away being camp counselors. Sam often seemed high energy and annoying while Charlie was more straight-laced and responsible. But, they seemed to get along like two peas in a pod.

Karen's Haunted House was the first one I thought of.

Real brothers that age would be fighting all the time, but I don't remember any examples of them fighting. They spent most of the time out of the house in any case.

I believe that they could be best friends, but they were also 2 years apart. It was often said that "Charlie and Sam were out with friends." I always read that Charlie and Sam were out together with a group of friends. Did Sam hang out with Charlie and the older guys, or was there a mix of upper and lower classmen hanging out together? Not unheard of but more common if they're in an extracurricular group together. But they never got sick of each other?!

I don't see Charlie (about to go to college and pretty serious) having a bunch of goofy 15-year-old friends and vice versa. I think it was lazy writing in order to explain away both of their absences in one go, but I like to believe they were each out with their own groups. My sister and I were two years apart and in all the same extracurriculars too. I saw plenty of her in real life, so she did not need to be included in my fun stuff away from home

My siblings were also two years apart. They were friendly with each other's friends but they definitely didn't hang out together. My sister is the older one, though. Senior girls aren't going to hang out with a bunch of sophomore boys, lol.
Sam seemed super busy with extracurriculars. Charlie kinda sounded like a bum in comparison.
