This one was funny. I liked the chapter of all of Karen and Maxie's "bragging" letters to each other. "I live in a castle with alligators." "Well I live in an apartment with 13 bedrooms." Etc. Maxie was quite the sophisticated 8 year old with pierced ears, contacts, and a glitter sweat shirt. I hope Mallory never had to meet her. It also made me remember my old school pen pals. I bet with e-mail and the cost of postage now that schools don't do too many pen pal projects anymore. The subplot sounded like the dreaded Presidential Fitness Test that I had to live through every single year. I could not do a pull up to save my life.

^ I loved this one, too. It's sad that they probably don't do pen pal programs anymore since I still remember mine and really enjoyed it - writing to a girl on an Indian Reservation in Montana. I had forgotten about the awful pull-ups on those tests. I knew a boy who actually got an 11%. ;D We started calling him 11%. ;D

I loved president fitness week! (Okay, I didn't, really) It was kind of boring. I still have my signed certificate from President Clinton. I'm thinking of getting it framed and putting it next to my picture of me and Nancy Reagan. Or maybe over the picture of me and Nancy Reagan. They might still do pen-pal programs. Emailing and typing is nice, but part of the reason they had those programs was so kids learned how to write legibly. And the oppurtunity to learn about another culture or people outside of your "bubble" should always be pursued. (Also, everyone loves getting mail that's not a bill or letter from the IRS, especially kids!)

^ Agree about the pen pal benefits. Hope they still do the program in at least some schools. ;D I don't remember the certificates for fitness week (I must have blocked that from my mind. ;D) but I'm sure I have mine around somewhere. ;D

I love getting mail I still write actual letters to friends and family, I think it's fun. Me too. I always send cards and letters to little kids I know, too, because I know it's especially a big deal for them. ;D

The subplot sounded like the dreaded Presidential Fitness Test that I had to live through every single year. I could not do a pull up to save my life. That's okay, I could never do one either. And my teacher would never be embarrassed to let everyone know that . She used to make me and the other kids who couldn't do a pull up just hang onto the bar like some pathetic monkey while she counted to ten. It was so humiliating . However, I enjoyed this book, despite the fact that the copy I got out of the library had all of the pictures colored in (however, they were accurate to the descriptions given so it was a plus ;D). Karen and Maxie's letters to each other were hysterical! ;D

the presidential fitness test... don't remind me. i was always slow, weak, and unflexible, so presidential fitness test was really just "special day to embarrass greer as much as possible." penny lane, why do you have a picture of you and nancy reagan?

penny lane, why do you have a picture of you and nancy reagan? Oh, she came to GR in the late 80s when I was 6 (I think it was 1989-90ish, before Bush Sr was voted in.) I don't remember why, probably to do something at the Gerald R Ford presidential library, or to talk at a graduation or something. Anyway, somehow my dad convinced her to talk at my school. So she did, and told us all to stay off drugs or whatever (didn't work) and then everyone on student government got to take a picture with her. (Yes, I was the 1st grade class president/student gov rep. I think it was randomly chosen). I really don't have that clear of a memory of it, and I'm not a huge fan of the Reagan era, so it's not really a big deal. If I met Pres Clinton, however, I'd be shouting it from the rooftops.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of Maxie's (for some reason, I just never cared much for her - not even sure why ;D) I was really glad her and Karen ended up friends. ;D I also thought the whole competition thing was very funny and could relate - it was also very Kristy-like. ;D

That's neat pennylane. Reagan came to my hometown when I was a month old while campaigning for president and I got his security bracelet from a family friend who was helping with his Mississippi campaign. It's still in my baby book.

I would have liked to have met President Ford. I have no desire to ever meet our current president, I dislike him too much and would probably end up ranting at him if I ever did meet him.
